Carl LaManna’s passion for good food and close family led him to create a new and exciting venue in Downtown Point Pleasant Beach where friends & family could gather. His vision was to build a first-class restaurant and bar in the heart of downtown Point Pleasant Beach, which at that time was not a permitted use. Despite the obstacles, he was able to obtain a Broad C liquor license without an approved site and then acquired 2 buildings downtown where he created an architecturally stunning space where people could partake in some of the best food and drink the Shore has to offer. He had the talent, the know-how, and the team set in place with his construction company to get the job done, and his marina put him in direct contact with purveyors of the freshest and highest quality ingredients for freshest food his restaurant would serve. Carl’s children: Michael, Megan, Carly and Ava Jade, share his passion for the ocean, and spend time with him here in Jersey and in South Beach. For the past 20 years Carl has spent much of his time deep-sea fishing the Florida Keys, Bahamas, Cuba & Puerto Rico. His is an avid sports fisherman of Tuna, Marlin, Swordfish, Mahi, Wahoo, Mako, and some of his trophy catches adorn the dining room walls of 709. Carl also enjoys lobster and conch diving, and while fishing and diving are his ultimate passion, he also loves skiing, photography and travel. (And architecture of course!)

A Little Bit of Italy on the Jersey ShoreWith commentary from Rick Piancone, Owner/Operator of Johnny Piancone’s in Long Branch, New Jersey In 1955, two brothers changed the way the New Jersey Shore viewed Italian Cuisine. Louis and John Piancone found a spot in Bradley Beach to open a deli. The deli grew into an Italian Specialties shop and bakery that became the go-to destination for all things Italian down the shore. By 1991, after almost 40 years and a second generation, John and his four children – Rick, Chip, Donna, and Anna – opened a family restaurant adjacent to the deli. They named it La Nonna Piancone’s Café, to commemorate their family’s matriarch.

Portugal: Land of Explorers In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil. Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century.
