In the 1930’s, local lore has it that a “Speakeasy” operated on the site of the present day Charley’s Ocean Grill. After Prohibition, the first legitimate business to occupy the site was a bar known as the Arrow Inn. In the 1940's the name was changed to Muldoon's and later to Cappy's Lounge. Cappy’s was owned by the Savoth family in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. It was bar and package goods business that catered to locals and fishermen. The Savoth family also owned the White Sands Beach Club located across the street in what is now Seven President’s Park. Their plan to incorporate the business into the beach club never materialized.

The history of The Manasquan Beach House began over a century ago. This fifty bedroom structure was initially constructed circa 1893, by Mary Potter, as a three story home on neighboring Fletcher Avenue. Ernest Froelich bought the house prior to the turn of the Twentieth Century, and moved it to its present location. After adding a wing equal in size to the original structure to the western end, it became known as The Jackson House, "The Closest Boarding House to the Beach." The Manasquan Board of Trade Booklet of 1910 contained an advertisement for the Jackson House, which listed Mr. Froelich as the proprietor. The Jackson House continued operation through 1948, with Mrs. Froelich in command. However, due to her failing health, the responsibility of the day-to-day operation fell on the shoulders of her younger sister, Ruth Urich. In February of 1949, Ruth was murdered at the rear of the building. To this day, her murder remains Manasquan's only unsolved homicide. Most recently the O’Neill Family owned and operated the business under the name of O’Neill’s Bar, Grill and Guesthouse. Prior to that Doc Donahue’s South and The Main St. Saloon were the owners in the late 70’s and through most of the 80’s. Now, the newly renovated, The Manasquan Beach House offers comfortable rooms and suites, decorated with great care to provide a cozy atmosphere and to make your stay with us as enjoyable as possible. We offer dining inside and on our porch. Our restaurant features pasta, steaks, specially prepared chef specialties by Chef Chris Ross, and the finest seafood in our region. We offer Lunch, Dinner and a Late Night Bar Menu. We have Sushi and a Children’s Menu. We have a unique atmosphere for the entire Family, whatever the season or event. Portugal: Land of Explorers In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil. Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century. Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!

Celebrated chef Matthew Zappoli, brother Paul Zappoli, and lifelong friend Michael Cacciuttolo have opened Tre Amici, or "Three Friends," on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch. The three graduates of Middletown High School North, after making their careers elsewhere, have come home to Monmouth County. Executive Chef Matthew Zappoli, a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, hails from the kitchens of some of America's most celebrated restaurateurs – including Charlie Palmer and Sami Ledeki.
