New Diner near Lord & Taylor

The Garment District has a beautiful new diner in premises formerly occupied by Wolf’s Bay Restaurant. All equipment, furnishings, owners and staff are new. The food and prices are a delight. There are daily specials for $6.95. For $3.00 more you get salad, dessert and beverage. An awfully nice meal for under $10. They have free delivery, but i prefer to sit in the comfortable booths, and chat with the friendly staff. They open at 6 am, and close at 8 pm Monday through Friday. On Saturdays it’s 7 am to 8 pm. They say they’ll be open later, and on Sundays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day to accommodate shoppers at Lord & Taylor and other nearby stores. And wonder of wonders their vegetables aren’t canned or frozen, they’re FRESH! I’ve been to this place several times, and expect to be a regular there.

salmon salad platter

An amazingly large hunk of salmon with honey mustard or tarter sauce served atop a nice mixed salad. A very tasty way to eat healthy.

roast turkey with stuffing

The turkey was moist and tasty, served with a generous portion of cranberry sauce, potato and vegetable. Instead of mashed potatoes I had the sweet potato fries. My vegetable was delightful chopped fresh spinach mixed with olive oil and garlic.

salisbury steak

Eating at various diners I had come to believe that a Salisbury steak is just an oversize grilled hamburger with some brown gravy slopped over it. So trying it at 38th Street Coffee Shop was a revelation. Their version is an oven-roasted concoction that includes several spices, and is topped with sliced red peppers. Extraordinary, moist, and delicious. It’s not on the everyday menu, but is occasionally offered as a special of the day. Don’t miss it!

cherry pie

I love pies, but for years have avoided ordering them in restaurants because the usual fare, made with canned commercial filling, is uniformly lacking in flavor. Upon learning that pies are baked everyday on premises at this fine diner I thought I would take a chance on a piece of pie. The generous wedge served to me was tasty and fresh — a reminder of what pies were like when I was a kid. I can’t wait to go back and try the blueberry.
