i am dying to give this place 5 stars. great sushi and sashimi, great service, low-key vibe… but they cooked my toro and didn’t think of giving to me as sashimi!!
also, omakase is NOT a must, if you are clear about what you like and are reasonably well acquainted with jap cuisine. a word of warning – if you’re looking for a totally authentic jap experience (à la tsukiji), then this isn’t the place for you – they will put unconventional (but often very fitting) sauces on your sashimi.

lives up to the hype!

Yeah, I’ve lived in Los Angeles the whole time, but never made it to Matsuhisa…took a friend for her birthday here…I recommend going to the sushi bar (always) to ask the chef what they recommend…not to mention you can see what’s fresh…

We went mostly by what the chef recommended…and everything was tip top!

What I ate:
  • *****

chef said it was Santa Barbara shrimp…I thought it looked like prawn…either way…sliced in half, in the shell (like how a lobster is prepared sometimes), shrimp roe intact, quickly blanched (like 2 seconds, I think), with a super light tangy (lemon?) sauce…. oh, this was superb!
