A little less impressed the second time

My follow-up review for this restaurant. Read my previous review for this restaurant here

Came back a second time and was a little less impressed.

What I ate:
  • ***

This was tasty in a lot of ways, but also seemed like too many semi-tasty options thrown into one. The fish was firm and slightly fatty, with a simple buttery sauce. It was on top a bed of gnocchi, which were typical and not that memorable. It included capers and olives, but overall it reminded me of the more staid fish options at its neighbor La Tosca.

  • ***

Since the bread pudding was such a knockout, I figured Spasso would find a way to take this dish and make it great. Turns out it just tastes like the average cheesecake you might get at any Italian restaurant. Nothing more to say.

  • ***

This soup was very tasty, in that butter is very tasty, but given its ingredients, it didn’t go above and beyond. It was very creamy, buttery, but still held its flavors together well. I would get it again, but I wouldn’t get too excited about it.

  • ****

I really liked this salad. The poached pears were the best part, but the pecans, white balsamic vinaigrette, and jicama came together nicely. Definitely a good salad choice.

A great addition for San Carlos

Spasso is an exciting new addition to the slowly growing cadre of upscale restaurants in downtown San Carlos and one I’m excited about revisiting. Like its neighbors La Tosca and Piacere, it offers a very nice interior with an Italian/Mediterranean menu and an extensive wine list. While the food would not get points for innovation in a crowded market like San Francisco, for the Peninsula it has a good selection of dishes that are more interesting that the prior two restaurants mentioned.

As for the food itself, it was often very good and very promising, especially given its only the fourth day. The mushroom soup was up there with some of the best butter-filled ones I’ve had and the lamb sirloin ($21.50) was very tasty (albeit a bit dry) and was atop a terrific soft bed of eggplant. The appetizer sampler ($16) has some really good options (the crab cakes and the ahi tuna) while the bruschetta and the calamari left something to be desired. The bread pudding with maple brandy sauce was tremendous and worth coming back for on its own. The two wines we tried (cab and zinfandel) were both very good and both in the mid-range ($8).

The service was very good and there were no signs that this place had just opened. Definitely coming back and hoping to find this is a five star restaurant.

While a little dry, this lamb was very tasty. It was on a bed of eggplant that added a lot to the flavor of the dish.

The appetizer sampler has some really good options. The crab cakes and the ahi tuna were both very good, though the bruschetta and the calamari left something to be desired. The bruschetta was too plain with mediocre bread and the calamari seemed like typical bar calamari.

The bread pudding with maple brandy sauce was tremendous and worth coming back for on its own. The bread pudding itself was very tasty and neither too dry or too soggy. The maple brandy was a great combination and had much more of a kick that typical buttery caramel sauces.
