A friend of mine discovered this eatery one day when he set out to find the worst Mexican food in Naperville.
Driving down Ogden, he saw the stereotypical sign and drove to their drive-through, ordered quesadillas, and drove away. He ate them in his car, hoping to discover truly horrible Mexican food to share with his friends. Knowing my friend, he probably psyched himself up. He probably made a face. He probably chickened out on his first bite.
But, he later told me, they were delicious.
Clearly, something was wrong. Any Mexican eatery with a drive-through………well, let’s not say anything bad about Taco Bell. Their lawyers might hurt me.
A few weeks later, he brought me. The decorations were tacky, the floor half-mopped, but they have fairly priced burrito combos. They had decent quesadillas.
And while El Centro does not serve perfectly authentic cuisine, it’s tasty without the heavy, greasy feeling you may get from eating at a certain national chain Mexican food business that shall remain unnamed. Their food isn’t as delectable as the cuisine at Front Street Cantina downtown, but it’s food I enjoyed.
Don’t expect too much. Just think of good food, but at a glorified fast-food joint. A glorified fast-food joint that actually makes the food it serves, instead of pulling everything from the freezer. It’s a nice change.
Did you eat at this restaurant? Are you a food lover? Have an opinion to share?
