A great deal for lunch too!

My follow-up review for this restaurant. Read my previous review for this restaurant here

So I got hungry after writing my review for Hukilau so I ended up going there for lunch! :D I just wanted to note that the lunchtime prices are slightly cheaper than dinner (e.g., the fried rice lunch plate is only $6, and an extra side of the mac salad is only $1), and as far as the fried rice goes, I think the serving was just as large. So far it’s lasted me 3 meals!

Aloha served here

Really, I give this place a 3.5 for the food, but 4 for the overall experience. The food is good, but not great. But this has become a favorite place to go for a night out with friends because:

1) The menu has something for everybody. if you’re not into Hawaiian food, they have some pretty tasty sounding burgers (i’ve never had one… but they sound good!).

2) Entrees run about $7-10 each, so no one has to break the bank over this meal.

3) The restaurant can pretty easily seat large groups. I’ve come here twice for birthday parties with more than 10 people, and it wasn’t a problem.

4) The atmosphere is chill and cheerful and… Hawaiian! And we all love Hawaii. Sometimes on weekend nights they’ll have live bands playing Hawaiian music. And if it’s someone’s birthday, they may invite them up to hula. :)

There are a few things I really like here, but they’re mostly side orders or appetizers. My only complaint is that none of the real Hawaiian dishes really blow me away. But it’s still good.

What I ate:
  • *****

Large chunks of cold raw tuna sashimi, onions, and sesame oil, this is a really refreshing and tasty appetizer

  • ****

Spam sushi – a slice of spam sitting atop a bed of rice and rolled in seaweed. There’s a little too much rice here and I wish the spam was grilled more, but it still satisfies my spam musubi cravings.

  • *****

This is what I usually order as my entree. I LOVE this fried rice, and I think it’s because of the little chunks of Kahuna sausage. I know others who don’t think this is anything special, so don’t get your hopes up… but I love it. yum.

  • ****

On days when I just don’t feel like the fried rice, this is my other pick. I prefer the broiled mahi mahi over the fried version (which is unusual… usually I’m all about the fried-ness) because this had a really nice light, healthy flavor to it.

  • *****

Ok, this is the BEST part of the entire meal! The mac salad is soooooo good… seriously my favorite mac salad ever. It doesn’t have the slightly sour taste that a lot of other mac salads have. The macaroni has a nice texture and the flavor is great.
