Renewed Hope for Taste!!!
Tomatoes was a serendipitous discovery for my tastebuds. Like most people these days, I’m constantly on the go. My girlfriend and I were driving around looking for somewhere in Summerville for Sunday brunch and we happened upon Tomatoes Italian Ristorante. Much to our surprise this wasn’t the typical Italian dive pizza parlor. Tomatoes is located on Trolley Road across from Iron Gate subdivision. We arrived and I commented, " I hope they’re playing Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra, not that cheesy accordian music that they play at Fazoli’s." To my amazement, Frank Sinatra was on when we walked in! The decor is wonderful, I was kind of maybe expecting some sticker shock on the menu from the looks of the place. Boy was I wrong, their lunch menu is fabuluous and just about all the dishes were $9.95.
Your meal starts off with complimentary bread and seasoned olive oil with sun dried tomatoes, kalamata and green olives. The lunch entrees have a salad included with them, definitely go for the Italian Garden salad with the Sun Dried Tomato Vinaigrette. The dressing on the greens just foreshadows what is in store for your mouth when the entree comes out. I had the Steak Scampi with Penne and red sauce. I was a bit excited and apprehensive at first, I mean how many ways can you cook steak and pasta? It is 12 hours later, and I’m still thinking about the meal. The steak was cooked perfectly. They also cover it in mozzerella and use real garlic to top the steak. The penne was al dente, just the way it should be, and the sauce was pretty good (maybe just a little bit more basil). My girlfriend had Shrimp Alla Rosa. It was sauteed shrimp over angel hair pasta covered with fresh vegetables. My meal was so great, I took a bite of hers. My goodness, I was jealous! The dish had this aromatic herb, which I can’t pinpoint, but it filled your nose most delightfully. Once your senses are heightened, you are brought in for a soft landing on the nutty after taste that follows. It makes you feel good inside, like you’re at an Italian grandmother’s house and she prepared this dish just for you. So for our brunch outting: 2 entrees, 2 drinks, 1 cappucino, our total was less than 30 bucks. I plan on going back many times over to try everything this restaurant has to offer.-
