Great Italian food and nice atmosphere

Andiamo (let’s go in Italian) is a great upscale-by-my-standards Italian restaraunt. The lighting is nice and subdued, and although it was fairly croweded when we were there, it wasn’t too noisy, even sitting relatively close to one of the speakers playing unobtrusive jazz. The menu offers a nice variety of Italian dishes, including meat, seafood, pasta, and some really tasty appetizers. It’s classical but lively Italian food prepared really well and presented finely.

The wine list — wow! We shared a few glasses of Valpolicello and pinot grigio (about $7 or $8 apiece) but the list includes everything from wine by the glass up to several bottles over a hundred dollars. Too rareified for my blood, but if that’s your thing, you can probably find something plenty fancy, here.

Our waiter was pretty friendly, at least at first, though we were overshadowed by the two nearby tables buying multiple bottles of wine and going several rounds of appetizers. I think we ended up getting short shrift by comparison, but by and large the service was good.

This definitely isn’t the kind of place you go to weekly, but it’s great for a special night out.

Dishes I tried:

Pasta Puttanesca

This was really, really good: Penne in a spicy tomato sauce with capers and olives, with chunks of chicken added (an extra $5 or $6, I think; adding shrimp was also an option). The penne was a tiny bit on the soft side; if not for the pasta’s being ever-so-slightly overcooked, this would be a five-star dish. It was really good. We licked the sauce out of the styrofoam for lunch the next day.

Lamb chops

One of the night’s specials was the lamb chops. Grilled chops (broiled a bit, too? They had a nice bit of crustiness on the outside) atop some crisp greens, served with sauteed green peppers and slivers of carrots, and gnocchi in a creamy sauce. The veggies weren’t the greatest: A little soft, and too buttery, but the chops and the gnocchi were excellent.

Antipasto Misto

Plenty for two, if not a third or fourth nibbler. This was a big plate of cold peppers, olives, discs of mozzarella, salami, proscuitto, tomatoes, and a piece of bruschette. The standouts were the proscuitto, which simply melted in my mouth, the olives, and bruschetta. Both the olives and the bruschetta were also very good. The tomatoes didn’t seem to fit very well; they weren’t quite ripe and didn’t mesh all that well with the rest of the bites.

We didn’t order this, but the guy at the next table did. It looked and smelled great.

overpriced and disappointing

This place takes the MS prime card so I thought I’d try it out. I was quite disappointed.

The food was pricey and not well-prepared or tasty. Our nonchalant waitress provided below-average service. The decor and atmophere were neither upscale, nor original/warm. With that kind of prices, I think they’re positioning themselves as a high-end restaurant, but instead, this is an unwelcoming place with overpriced meals.

I don’t think I’m going back, and I can’t imagine going there without the prime card.

Bad Food, Bad Service

They were very innatentive, and not very busy. They use obviously canned tomatoes in their bruchetta and pasta dishes.
Way overpriced for the quality.
