Fiery Food Free of Flesh

I’m not strictly vegetarian, so I wasn’t expecting much from a strict vegetarian Thai restaurant. I am striving to find places where I can get something truly hot in Seattle. I was delighted with Araya in its new location. The large storefront setting was nicely lit and decorated. The staff was particularly friendly and helpful; if they’d been more attentive, I would justify giving 5 stars to this lovely destination. They didn’t have a liquor permit, but they said they expect one around March 2007.

The appetizers were quite delightful and everyone got really fresh vegetables in their dishes. What really delighted me was that my call for “Thai style” was finally answered. The waitress confirmed that I wanted hot, fresh chillis, and I started to get excited. Remembering that I was in Seattle, I was prepared for another dish with a disappointingly ‘tepid’ level of spice.

Boy was I in for a treat! I got the Spicy Noodles and didn’t have to wait long before the burn set in. My mouth was on fire, but the other flavors of the dish came through beautifully.

I’ll definitely be returning to find out how the other dishes on the extensive menu turn out when they’re made “Thai style”. My dining companions ordered 3-star dishes and were delighted, though not as sweaty as me. The one item that was not so delightful was the ‘veggie chicken’ in one of the curry dishes. It doesn’t taste like chicken, or anything else I’d really want to eat.

Dishes I tried:

Spicy Noodles

The noodles were stir fried with a nice helping fried tofu, ‘bean composition’ and lovely fresh vegetables.

Vegetables Satay

The skewers of fresh, broiled vegetables were way more tasty than they looked. The sauces – peanut and something like salsa – were great.

Green Papaya Salad

We love green papaya salad – it’s what we order at every Thai restaurant. Araya’s is easily the best I’ve had in Seattle.

Veggie does its job here

Aha, my first vegetarian Thai food try, and it feels good. At Araya, u can find impressive décor, accommodating waitress, and fine utensil. The food looks a little floaty, but not that bad when it comes with right taste and pretty plate.

Dishes I tried:

Wide rice noodle

It comes with a variety of veggies & broth.

Panang curry

Tofu could do the same job as meat does here. No worries.

I’ve only gone for the buffet, but for the price it’s very good. They don’t change the menu however, and the staff if friendly.

My favorite restaurant! We are regulars and go almost every Saturday for the lunch buffet. Araya and her kids are fantastic and the cooks prepare some delicious food. There’s always something new. Last time we were there, Araya herself brought us two fresh vegetable spring rolls with a nutty dipping sauce – they were wonderful.

Parking can be tough when it’s busy, but other than that – no complaints. I always end up eating way more than I intend here.
