Ditto what AM says. Like Peter Street Deli, I love the Ave’s daily specials. They mix it up a bit more so in addition to carved in stone ones, like the legendary braised beef short ribs on Thursdays, they also have some once in a while ones, like the pastitchio (kind of like moussaka but with macaroni). Also don’t miss their 2 daily soups are always good. Any of the bean-based ones use the offcuts from the deli meats as part of the stock = beefy goodness. Oh yeah. The deli meats are from Lesters, so it’s also a pretty good bet.

Oh..i miss the Avenue! Wednesday turkey with stuffing and all! and the buttery mac & cheese, not for the faint of heart. They offer half portions of their daily specials but for the small price difference, get the full deal. Sit in for breakfast but take-out for lunch, it gets packed.

I was first introduced to this place by a good friend and diner enthusiast, and it’s since become a favourite when I’m in the neighbourhood and crave a greasy spoon. If there were a greasy spoon award, the Ave would receive top honours. A tiny closet oozing with character and ambiance and surly staff, the food can’t be beat. Breakfasts, burgers, grilled cheese, BLT, fries, I’ve even tried the souvlaki here. Everything is great and homemade. If you like a hot lunch, they have a hot counter with mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, meat loaf type stuff that seems to change daily. Me, I’m a grilled cheese kind of girl if you couldn’t tell. Though my fave at the Ave is the cheese omelette breakfast. I don’t make it there too often but the Ave is always a treat.
