A One Of A Kind Place
In 1958 ex baseball player Lefty O’Doul opened a restaurant/lounge within walking distance from San Francisco’s Union Square. The place is large and has a front and back dining areas. There are comfortable semi-private booths and tables. Food is served cafeteria style, but before you grimace, imagine. You walk in hungry, grab a tray and within minutes you’re walking to your seat with a home cooked meal that would make Mom smile (honestly). Last Friday I met some friends there for dinner. I had the roast turkey with gravy and stuffing, string beans, and a green salad. The turkey, like all meat selections, is cut in front of you as you order. The server will cut slices to your preference. My turkey was sliced 1/2 inch thick and I asked for brown gravy over the top. The turkey was moist and the brown gravy piping hot and rich. The stuffing was good, but to be honest it takes a really lame cook to screw up stuffing. String beans and green salad were fresh and crisp, full of flavor. I topped this meal off with an ice cold Newcastle pint on tap, bliss. After dinner I witnessed a server carving up a fresh apple pie, I broke down and had a slice. My father had a saying at the dinner table when I was a kid, he’d say “Nobody gets up from THIS TABLE hungry!” The same can be said for Lefty O’Doul’s. My dinner (sans drink and dessert) was about $10, and the portions are generous. As if that weren’t enough, Lefty’s has specials starting from $5 such as spaghetti and meat sauce. It’s website is also worth a visit.
