Tasty but is it worth the heart attack?
Had dinner at BarFry and sampled the fried goodness in all of its glory.
Certain items were absolutely brilliant. In these pieces the oil, crispiness, and fried nature accentuated the flavor of the food (crab cake, pork dumpling, pumpkin, onion, shrimp).
Some were middling (eggplant, cod, tuna), with the greasiness just piling on to the items without adding flavor.
The scallop was markedly disappointing.
Also chowed on some of the popcorn and enjoyed a tasty arugula and beet salad with a wasabi vinaigrette that was quite refreshing.
Desserts were okay but nonplussing with the homemade ice cream tasty. The cupcake was bland, although the frosting was killer.
The staff are friendly and welcoming and sitting at the bar was definitely part of a more engaged experience. The music was definitely close to my heart, with a good mix of early 1990’s hip-hop.
For all of the fried stuff consumed, we didn’t walk away with that ill feeling, which is pretty impressive.
I will definitely be back with some friends to revel in the greasy goodness. Nonetheless, I fear for the viability of this restaurant. It’s very good at what it does but I don’t know that it’s going to be a long-term proposition, what with $40/head tabs (without booze) for fried food.
