Yummy Asian fusion
Looking for a great time in a trendy, themed, fusion restaurant? Look no further than Betelnut. This is my second time here and I’ve loved it both times. The kitchen opens up to the dining area so aromas lift through the air and consume you even before you eat; leaving you salivating like Pavlov’s dogs.
Word of advice: Since its so good, the wait for drop-ins can be atrocious. Better RSVP and show up at your time if you want to get in. One time I showed up to put my name on the list. They asked me to return in an hour. I did and they said to check back in another 45 minutes. I highly recommended RSVPs
Dishes I tried:
Cecilia's minced chicken & lup cheong with lettuce cups
Very good. Lettuce is crisp and fresh.
Curried potato and sweet pea samosas with mango chutney
Samosas had a very nice crispy shell with soft warm centers. Great amalgamation of different textures. Mango chutney works well
"bien pow" firecracker chicken with szechuan chilis, onions, & toasted almonds
Just look at the ingredients!

One Visit Maybe Enough.
They are recommended on Michelin guide along Nopa and Burma Superstar, but I’m not sure if I can say that they are producing same kind of quality food.
Food/Beverage: 3.5 stars
Although they were all fairly good, nothing blew our mind. Thai noodles, Mee Goreng, Kalbi were all familiar, but made me think of 3 different restaurants where I could have them better and cheaper.
Plate presentation needs work. They really look like somebody just threw things on plates.
Bloody Mary they have there, with green onion and garlic and other spices in, was very good. I wasn’t too excited about the beverage list presentation and the gimmicky drink list they had.
Service: 3 stars
Food came out quickly enough, but servers can be rude or just not proper and polite. Without a hello, they go right into “Do you know what you want to drink?” as soon as you sit down.
Atmosphere: 3.5 stars
The place is set up to look like old Shanghai, I guess. I think it’s working for what it is. I’m not sure about the server uniform. That looks a bit cheesy. Great that they have an open kitchen, but if the cooks in the kitchen have to look at you up and down and keep staring your at butt as you are trying to go to the restroom, not a great restaurant experience.
I probably won’t be back. If you experience them once, that might be enough.

The food is Chinese.. American style in the heart of busy Union Street. I typically don’t like to eat at “trendy” Chinese style restaurants, but the food is actually good here. The decor is a little tacky for my taste, but I’ve always enjoyed having dinner and drinks here.
Line ups and waits can get very long if so make sure you’re ready for that if you go during peak dinner hours.
