You got salad again?
My follow-up review for this restaurant. Read my previous review for this restaurant here
Man, people keep warning me away from salads. Except the nutritionists who write for Cosmopolitan. Guess they’re wrong.

Strawberry & Spinach Salad
Maybe I should have steered away after seeing they put chicken, egg, and strawberries together in a salad. Still, I’m a sucker for anything spinach/fruit salad-y, so I just ordered it without the chicken or egg. The strawberry vinaigrette tasted fine, but it had an odd jam-like consistency (high fructose corn syrup, anyone?) and walnuts were burned. They looked burned, tasted burned, were burned.
A non-South Loop Club burger in the south loop
Of our three person party, only one had a decisive desire and she demanded a burger. We ran down the possibilities in Pilsen and opted instead to head into the Loop. Again faced with multiple choices, someone tossed Hackney’s into the running. I had never been (save for killing time while I waited for my evening plans to be cancelled due to the George Diamond fire) so I was for trying somewhere new.
While looking over the menu, a fellow diner leaned over and remarked that he comes for the beer. When a stranger makes such a glowing review I have to find out for myself. I chose a summer ale (the name of which escapes me) and it was head and shoulders above my usual PBR.
The food was delicious and the beer superb, making for an enjoyable summer evening. As a Columbia College student, I don’t know how I could have missed such a great spot in the South Loop.

Original French Fried Onions
The french fried onions were a solid appetizer, flavorful enough to stand out on their own but not so heavy as to fill you up even before you’ve received the rest of your meal.
-
Turkey Burger
I didn’t have the turkey burger proper but a stuffed turkey burger, which happened to be the special that day. The burger easily dwarfed the bun which made navigating the burger a bit perilous. And by perilous I mean delicious.
a postcard from the cheeseburger adventure
i love cheeseburgers, and dare I say it? i know cheeseburgers. hackney’s has been a big part of my childhood and my burger education.
now that i’m grown-up and allowed to look at the liquor selection, i was no less impressed; they have specialty beers bottled and on tap: in fact,
while i was musing out loud about what kind of beer to get, the man next to me leaned over and gave some advice, saying, “i come here for the beer.”
even if that man hadn’t been there, i would’ve been okay – there are beautiful descriptions of every beer; i ended up picking one based on its description of an orange flavor with a cinnamon aftertaste, and it didn’t disappoint.
i’m also going to throw in a plug for the inside-out burger: the cooks stuff a burger with cheddar and bacon before they grill it. my dining companion got it, and while he was unwilling to share (and who can blame him?) i may have to go back to get my own.

Original French Fried Onions
okay: technically they were fried onions, but french fried? i like my onions with lots of batter, but these were fried onions with a few crumbs on them. unexpected, but still pretty good.

The Famous Hackneyburger
it was good. but. call me a fatty, but it was too small. it was only slightly thicker than a mcdonald’s burger but about $6.50 more. however, it was significantly better. sorry, ronald.
Great pub food and beer selection
Hackney’s is one of my favorite bars in the South Loop/Printer’s Row area. It’s always got a good beer selection that changes seasonally and the food is quite good. It’s really nice to be able to go to a bar with good food that’s not just burgers (altho the burgers are good here). In the summer there’s a great patio for eating and drinking outdoors.

Reuben
Can’t go wrong w/ corned beef and thousand island. I wish there was even more meat, but it did taste really good.
