Gumbo was satisfying, if not too exciting. I’d eat here again, which is more than I can say for most of the Cajun/Creole places in the city.

Southern cuisine gets caught amidst corporate buildings, theatre houses, and up-and-coming gay boys who either can’t afford Chelsea or are fleeing the bitchiness of Chelsea. Suffice it to say, it’s always an interesting mix of people sitting down inside.

The menu is more or less rather un-noteworthy. Hush puppies and gumbo — which were pretty good by the way — make appearances on the menu, so it gets to keep the credits afforded to it by its name.

But upon insistency by my waiter, do NOT try to the fried chicken. I didn’t, but I watched people at two other tables push theirs around on their plate while they ate everything else but it. And judging by the dissatisfied looks on their face (and the amount of chicken left behind after the plates were collected), I was grateful I didn’t waste the money.
