great wine, salmon, & salad

Really liked the Seoma Cabernet they were pouring. The smoked salmon was recommended and I have to say that it did taste good. I was mainly after a Caesar salad when I walked in, which I had & it was really good as well. The prices didn’t set me back too much either, which is what I would expect of a bistro, so I plan to bring my boyfriend there, as soon as I can find one… :)

Very elegantly served & flavorful. I love salmon and this was just what I hoped it would be.

A very nice Caesar salad that matched what I came in for.

I loved the fact that I was able to get a glass of Cabernet at this price (it was happy hour mind you). The wine had none of the qualities that would indicate it was anything cheap. It was a Seoma cabernet which I don’t really know, but it was great and also, it was served in the type of glass that really enhances a red wine’s bouquet. Their happy hour pricing is probably going to keep me coming back…

Give it a try

I approached Bistro Bistro warily, having read some less than flattering reviews, but my friend really wanted to check it out.

I was glad that we did.

The decor is not great with bright yellow walls, odd art, TV showing sports, and oddly placed tables. And the dining room was warm.

Overall, I thought it was a good meal and a good value. Because we got there early (around 6 pm on a weekday), we enjoyed a pretty decent glass of house wine for only $2.50.

Traditional French food can be a bit heavy for warm DC summer but we were both satisifed with our meals (the hanger steak and the duck, about $19 each). I especially enjoyed the orange sauce with the duck although the duck was a touch over-cooked. My companion said her steak was good although there were few vegetables and lots of fries.

Our waiter was friendly and efficient, spoken English well, and seemed to know the menu. We did not have to wait long or beg for service so clearly some early problems appear to have been addressed.

Given the reasonable prices, good portion sizes, convenient location, and considering the quality of the food, I would describe Bistro Bistro a solid dinner out but probably not for a special occassion.

wait to visit

We visited on Sat night June 13. We found that the restaurant only opened about a week ago. This should have been a big hint about things to transpire but we were so hungry and wanted to sit down so we went in. Just how new the restaurant was became readily apparent as soon as we sat down. Staff didn’t seem to know what waiter had what tables as after some time passed, we had to flag down the person who sat us to ask him who our waite was.
We ordered a bottle of wine which took awhile to arrive. Waitress had difficulty with corkscrew and I was tempted to grab it from her as I could have done it much more quickly!
Our orders were taken but after some time passed, waitress came back to tell us that the kitchen was out of a certain dish.
Our dinners finally came out after about what seemed like 30 minutes and my dinner was COLD. Fries and skirt steak were stone cold so I had to send it back.
Food – very average
Service – waiters need more training pronto – at least ours does.
Ambience – very strange arrangement of tables and much too bright. Room temperature was too humid and hot which was probably due to front door remaining open.
I suggest waiting about a month before trying because perhaps by then the kinks will have been worked out.
