I approached Bistro Bistro warily, having read some less than flattering reviews, but my friend really wanted to check it out.
I was glad that we did.
The decor is not great with bright yellow walls, odd art, TV showing sports, and oddly placed tables. And the dining room was warm.
Overall, I thought it was a good meal and a good value. Because we got there early (around 6 pm on a weekday), we enjoyed a pretty decent glass of house wine for only $2.50.
Traditional French food can be a bit heavy for warm DC summer but we were both satisifed with our meals (the hanger steak and the duck, about $19 each). I especially enjoyed the orange sauce with the duck although the duck was a touch over-cooked. My companion said her steak was good although there were few vegetables and lots of fries.
Our waiter was friendly and efficient, spoken English well, and seemed to know the menu. We did not have to wait long or beg for service so clearly some early problems appear to have been addressed.
Given the reasonable prices, good portion sizes, convenient location, and considering the quality of the food, I would describe Bistro Bistro a solid dinner out but probably not for a special occassion.
