3.0I am beginning to understand that if I order a glass of wine to accompany lunch in Edmonton, eventually, someone will call social services and relieve me of the custody of my children.
Lunch on Friday at the Blue Plate Diner had promise: the diner is funky, in an interesting neighbourhood close to the new Urban Fresh market, the menu is blessedly limited, and the waiter appeared promptly. When we ordered a bottle of wine to be shared between the three of us, however, his attitude became precious and taunting.
Let me assure you, firstly, that I was with two other adults who are both well over legal age, all sober, bathed and in control of our faculties. We smiled politely and laughed off his inappropriateness, as most of us would do. I assumed that he realized that he had crossed a line as soon as the words left his mouth – give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Why would he want to alienate us when we were willingly adding $35 to the bill? (I didn’t say it was a good wine, did I?)
Despite this, the food was really delicious, although we were victim to the remove-the-plate-before-everyone-is-finished faux pas (far more common in chain restaurants). After the clearing of the entrees, another server made a loop around our table (Formica, probably from my mum’s kitchen) and said in a sing-songy voice, “So, how was the wine, ladies?!” Perhaps he was the designated ASIP certified staff member, checking that we had not been overserved. Very creepy.
Incidentally, my kids are older teens and an adult. They tolerate my apparently heavy drinking…

5.0I love the art for sale on the walls, and the retro decor is fabulous! I love the mismatched dishes and cutlery, it’s so endearing. The Ranch Eggs are the best for brunch!
The ranch eggs are the best! They taste better every time I have them…

06/14/2007A little pricey for what you get I would say though… and a little too much raw garlic come to think of it!
