Expensive Mexican food?! It's worth it.

The first thing people say when I tell them about Border Grill is, “what? how can it cost that much?!” It’s true, Border Grill is no cheap eatery, and neither is its sister restaurant Ciudad. But, if you’re willing to pay, you’re in for a treat.

Border Grill is a loud, fairly spacious restaurant that has both an upstairs and downstairs. There is plenty of funky art all around to stimulate your visual cortex, while your palate waits for its turn to be stimulated. I’ve been there quite a few times this year and the two Hot Tamales (the owners, Susan and Marysue) have never disappointed.

The first thing you’ll get at your table is a basket of chips with a selection of 3 salsas that are pretty dang tasty. Next, the waiter will ask if you would like some guacamole. Be forewarned, this guacamole is not free. In fact, my only gripe with this place is that they will often suggest you purchase the more expensive dish or side. I guess they’re used to serving customers who aren’t looking for cheap eats.

In addition to food, they have an extensive Tequila selection and variety of mixed drinks. The mixed drinks are on the pricier side $10+ and are often small on volume, but I heard they’re good. They did not seem to get mirabell_19 drunk, so I don’t know how much alcohol they contained.

The service is great. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. Please see below for my food ratings.

I would definitely come here again.

mashed avocado, cilantro, red onion, jalapeño, and lime. this was very very tasty, however, it is not worth the price. it would be better if they actually made it table side.

normal sangria plus remy martin vsop. the server suggested we get a pitcher of the premium over the regular because the remy gives you more of a buzz. i didn’t really feel much of a buzz, but it was good.

Border Grill serves up Modern Mexican Cuisine

Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger define modern Mexican cuisine as light and healthful with large doses of flavor. They take authentic Mexican fare featuring traditional meats, poultry, and seafood and enhance them with fruits, vegetables, herbs, fresh salsas, rice, beans, and handmade tortillas. Everything is made from scratch using the freshest and sustainable ingredients from the food to even the signature cocktails. They are members of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program and only serve sustainable seafood. They also developed a program called “Good for the Planet, Good for You” giving guests the choice of dishes made from at least 80% plant-based ingredients. This program encourages guest to get meat out of the center of the plate and build the meal around vegetables, grains, beans, salads, and fruits.

Dishes I tried:

Yucatan Pork

Yucatan Pork is achiote pork slow roasted in banana leaves, caramelized onion, orange, cinnamon served with sautéed plantains, rice, black beans, guacamole, and handmade corn tortillas. OMG, this is absolutely fabulous! Banana leaves are a great way to roast meats (ask anyone from Hawaii). The leaves subtly flavor the meat as it cooks. The onion, orange, and cinnamon were a beautiful combination with the succulent pork. The guacamole was creamy and tasted so fresh. The plantains were caramelized with a slightly sweet taste, reminded me of bananas foster. The tortillas had a rich roasted corn flavor, great for making your own tacos with the pork. Thumbs up, way up

Chile Relleno Burger

Chile Relleno Burger is ground Black Angus brisket topped with a roasted poblano stuffed with manchego, panela, cotija cheeses inside a brioche bun with chipotle aioli, tomato, shredded romaine and served with cumin fries. This is a match made in heaven! I love chile rellenos and topped on a juicy, flavorful burger – what else could a gal (or guy) ask for! There are so many flavors going on, that your taste buds start to dance – a little spicy from the poblano, a little smoky from the chipotle aioli, creamy from the blend of cheeses, and meaty burger to bring it together like a symphony. The cumin fries were great, especially with a dip into the chile sauce that they bring out with the chips. The helping of fries could be a little bigger as it left me wanting more. They are addictive! Thumbs up, way up!
