I’ve been to Tomoya several times for both lunch and dinner and would rate this as a pretty good sushi restaurant – for Burnaby. The one drawback is the slow and inconsistent service. I went once for lunch and there was only one other customer in the restaurant and it still took way too long for our order to come – probably because the kitchen often gives priority to take out orders. Another time at dinner the waitress completely forgot to serve our complimentary miso soup. Other than service, the food is pretty good – the sakura, flying dragon, and hawaii rolls are good. Some of the rolls are just too weird – like the sunrise roll with sun dried tomatoes and capers – i think they add tomato paste to stretch the sun dried tomatoes and the roll ends up tasting horrible. It also calls itself a French Japanese fusion restaurant, but it’s totally not. It’s a Burnaby sushi restaurant run by Chinese. I hear the waitress speaking Mandarin to the sushi chef.

Japanese fusion for those wanting to try something a little different. For the less adventurous, they have the usual suspects on the extensive menu as well. Modern, lounge type decor, generally minimal wait time. Try one of the special rolls or the spicy salmon sashimi….yummm!
