One of the Great Inns of New England

The Colonial Inn is the best romantic restaurant west of Boston. The main dining room is just pure elegance in the best of old New England tradition. Service is marvelous and the food is both imaginative and top quality. Surprisingly, the prices are quite moderate.

We went for the early-bird served until 5:30 during the week, but only until 5:00 on Sunday. The world’s BEST clam chowder and dessert are included. Don’t miss the chowder and the apple pie ala mode – they are to die-for. Early birds are prix-fixe, now at $15.95 for a 3-course gourmet meal. Don’t miss it, but the regular menu is wonderful and not over-priced.

What I ate:
  • ****

Fork-tender eye of round was finished with a succulent gravy. Served with garlic mashed potatoes, and fresh asparagus. Enough to take home for another meal. Wonderful, tasty dish.

  • *****

I asked for and received an end-cut from the roast. It was fork-tender, moist, and tasted strongly of garlic and herbs. There was a little fat typical of prime rib, but not too much. The portion was easily adequate for a big eater, or enough for dinner the next day from the leftovers.
