Thai/Lao Cuisine? -- NOT!

I only wish I could have given this restaurant zero stars. I ate at this restaurant a couple of years ago and the food was decent, not great but reasonable. We ate there last Saturday evening and the food was nothing short of terrible. Now, I am somewhat spoiled since I have lived in Thailand and my wife is from the Isaan area of Northeast Thailand (Nongbua Lamphu province).

First, we were attracted to this place because the chalkboard on the street in front of the restaurant was advertising both Lao Raw Beef Salad and Ant Egg Salad (Ant Eggs imported from Laos). Given that my wife loves both of these dishes because they are popular in her home town, we went in. As it turns out, the restaurant had neither even though we were there by 6:30 PM.

We ordered Som Tam Ba La (Lao style) but the waitress said that they did not have Ba La (not sure how you cook Lao style food without it). My wife spoke to them in Thai and told them to make it “Thai spicy like in Thailand” but the dish came out only mildly spicy.

We ordered Larb Pla, which is a Thai salad that is supposed to be made of lightly boiled minced fish and seasoned with rice powder. The dish they brought out had pieces of deep fried fish and lots of Khao Taut (Fried Rice Cake pieces) and no spice at all.

We also ordered Pla Rad Prik and the sauce tasted like it had been made with canned tomato paste. But the thing that really just told me that this was not a Thai/Lao restaurant was the rice. We ordered Khao Neow (sticky rice) but what they brought us was the short-grained, non-glutinous rice that is very common in Northeast China, Korea, and Japan rather than the Thai sweet (glutinous) rice common to Thai/Lao cuisine.

I would avoid this place at all costs.
