A great place to eat and study

Evergreen is one of the few coffee shops with the ideal combo of free internet, cheap coffee ($1.25 with free refills), no time limits, real food, and cozy charm. The music used to be a bit loud, but with the complaints of the clients, it’s toned down over time. But they let loose on some nights and have live local musicians perform. The clientel are students, professors, stay at home moms, and others that may work out of the home. During the day, there can be quite a few noisy little kids but they don’t stay long. I avoid the place on weekends especially now that Miss Shirley’s is next door and people spill over into the Evergreen making it hard to find a comfortable place to sit.

The internet gets a little spotty at times, but there are a couple other signals in the area. I like the fact you can chill on a couch, sit in a booth, study at a table, or pull up a high stool. The service is consistent with familiar faces over the years. The food is a mix of sandwiches, salads, misc. specials of the day, and pastries. Though not an extensive menu, you can find something to satisfy your craving. The coffee they serve is the Baltimore classic Daily Grind coffee, which is okay but not my favorite.

What I ate:
  • *****

I love this type of salad with the mix of turkey, walnuts, strawberries, mandarin orange slices, blue cheese, and mixed greens. It’s very fresh and plentiful.

  • ***

This is a dense cookie. It’s baked daily. It’s a little dry. It’s best when right out of the oven or if you ask for it to be warmed up.

  • ***

This is a little less dense than the chocolate chip cookie with its combo of oatmeal, raisins, chocolate chips, dried cranberries, etc (I’m not even sure what’s in it). Again, ask for it to be warmed up.

  • *****

I love this muffin! But then again I love corn muffins. This muffin is moist and has the extra kick from the few cranberries on top.

  • *****

I have tried a few iced versions of their coffee drinks, but I like the iced chai the best. It’s from a powdered mix, but it comes out great.
