Good food and ambiance
We dropped in Sunday afternoon. The menu had a lot of selection. Prices are reasonable for the genre. We got an omelet. It was ginormous, all the fillers were fresh, it came with real cut fried potatoes and toast. The coffee was good too. The place is a bit small. There is outside seating in the back, we got there too late for that and had a small booth instead. The decor is interesting, lots of old articles displayed everywhere. The staff was attentive and friendly.

Overall very good
It’s amazing how people can write a review, good or bad, with one or very few experience(s).
Since my in-laws live in Fallbrook, I’ve eaten A LOT of meals at the Wayside and while I don’t have a real favorite, I can truthfully say I’ve never had a bad meal there.
Sure, some better than others, and no… it’s not the very finest dining in Calif, but I can’t say I’ve ever had a “bad” meal there. I’ve never been disappointed.
I guess if I had to choose a favorite it would be the stand-by, cheeseburger and fries.
It’s small, cozy, full of memorabilia and trinkets, an honest (but small) lunch counter that overlooks the grill, and really nice folks.
And… judging by the crowds at lunchtime with people waiting outside, it’s can’t be all THAT bad.
By the way, it changed hands several months ago so it might be worth another try.

Burger & Fries
Good, big, everything on it fresh, and with fries it’s a whole meal.
Unbelievably horrible food
I ordered a turkey sandwich with swiss. I Got sliced translucent processed rubbery meat substitute unfit for a dog and fake, straight-off the back of wax paper processed cheese like substance. I asked the waitress why the swiss cheese had no holes but had wrinkles from the tell-tale signs of it’s origin, the wax paper it was peeled from, indelibly imprinted on it. She shrugged as if she’d never seen real swiss cheese before and walked off. Wanting a healthy meal my friend ordered a fresh garden salad. What he got was shredded iceberg lettuce taco filling plopped on a plate covered in diced mushy tomatos buried beneath shredded cheddar cheese. If I were to go on a hunt to buy the cheapest, most generic brand lunch meat, nutrient deficient produce and cheese I could find from the grocery store it would still exceed the quality of this supposed “restaurant” food.
best breakfast
the wayside cafe has the best french toast i’ve ever had! i have family members that also enjoy the egg ‘skillet’ dishes… i’m betting every breakfast there is great! huge servings as well – the french toast slices are bigger than any restaurant i’ve been to. good prices as well.
