I finally got back for the Pha'al challenge....
I finally got back for the Pha’al challenge. Definitely worth the trip, although I can’t say that it was dramatically hotter than the extra-spicy Vindaloo I ordered on my prior visit. On the other hand, my standard of hotness may have risen due to my constant search for the spiciest dining venues. (My daughter ordered the Vindaloo with normal spice on this visit – it was appreciably milder than the Pha’al – one bite of that brought tears to her eyes.)
We thoroughly enjoyed the meal as well as the ambiance – we were surprised to see that we’d been at the restaurant for over 2 hours when we left.
Also, I am now the proud owner of an authentic Brick Lane Curry House “Pha’al Curry Monster” certificate.

Seafood Sizzler
Great selection of seafood, ask for a side of the masala sauce to make it even more better!!
Really Spicy Food
This is the place to indulge your need for a fire in the belly. Having moved to Seattle, I sometimes get a bit desparate for a good fix of fire, so I’m glad there’s a reliable place in New York, where I grew up and where I travel pretty regularly.
The atmosphere is good for a date, but comfortable for an evening with family and friends.
I went early in the evening, so we were one of just a few tables seated. It’s probably a bit raucous later in the evening.
There’s a “P’hal challenge” that entails eating a dish of an exceedingly chilli’d curry, with the reward of a free beer (and a place in their “P’hal of phlame?”). I had to plan for a flight back to Seattle the next day, and anyone adventurous with capsicum will understand why I was a bit conservative and deferred the challenge. Fortunately, the Vindaloo I ordered (specifying South Indian Style), was the hottest thing I’ve had for quite a while.
BTW: Google maps is wrong about the location – it’s near 2nd Ave.

Pork Vindalloo
This was a delightfully spicy, full-flavored curry. The pork was a little bit dry and apparently had been cooked in something a bit milder than the curry it was served in.
