Corner Cuban-Mexican Cafe of My Dreams

When I go too long without savoring some of Cafe Habana’s mouthwatering grilled corn with chili powder, cotija cheese, and lime, it starts showing up in my dreams with disturbing regularity. Eventually I head downtown and brave the crowds to snag a table at this tiny eatery, and I remember that it’s not just the corn that’s incredible. The salads are fresh and complex, the tlacoyo de tresmarias a perfect indulgence with goat cheese and masa, the skirt steak smoky and flavorful.

Wash it all down with some tall mojitos, and then move on out, because someone is definitely waiting for your table.

Dishes I tried:

The most incredible combination of corn, cheese, and spiciness ever concocted, this grilled corn is the stuff that dreams are made of – all too literally, in my case.

This salad is a great entree when you want to save all your indulgence for the corn. The mango and jicama add a nice sweetness and crunch respectively to the basic salad, which is always composed of perfect produce.

This ‘boat’ made of masa contains a wealth of goat cheese that warms the insides and the soul. There’s enough on the plate for two, if you’re stoic enough to attempt sharing.

Corn: good. Entrees: bland and overpriced, but then again I didn’t have high hopes for Mexican food in Soho.

Yes, the food here is far better than your tab would care to admit. Cafe Habana is: elbow-to-elbow, pardon-me-please-repeat, unpretentious-decor-focus-on-the-food Cuban goodness.

The corn is unbelievable, and overall, the menu is tasty and surprisingly cheap. The wait can be really long at night because locals pack the place at all waking hours. But they still have great service and their cocktails (read: mojitos and margaritas) are super fresh and more than welcome once you finally get in. I personally think the SoHo location makes it a great, cost-effective place to drop into while shopping.

World's Best corn on the cob

The wait at the door is quickly forgotten once the scrumptious, must-have corn-on-the-cob gets to the table. The memory of this corn makes my mouth water with it’s lime and parmesan and yummy butter coating.
It’s down-to-earth place with character people to match and an easy and stroll to great shopping along Broadway near Houston.

order their corn which we’ve lovingly named ‘crack on a stick’ because that’s exactly what it is. their other food is delicious too but Crack on a Stick is their money maker.

The corn is great. The rice is very flavorful and usually outshines the main dishes. The steak is good for the price you are paying.
