adding on...
I agree with the other two reviews. Food was good, but I felt I was also paying for the ambience, which was festive and inviting. A little loud at times and kinda dim, so we had to pump up our voices and try to share our tiny candlelight to see the food. :p I think that made it seem more like we were outside… I believe there were a lot of Cuban diners too, which goes to show that this place is authentic.
Side note: I’m a big fan of the couches near the entrance! Makes any kind of waiting worthwhile since they bring out drinks to you.
Dishes I tried:
Jumbo Volcano Shrimp (hot)
Comes in a soup-like hot sauce with yellow rice and salad. The shrimp is awesome and HOT!! I wasn’t able to finish the soup (due to its spiciness) but pouring some on the rice might have helped.
Melango Colada
Melon, pina colada, mango – in that order. Fabulous.

tons of variety
The ambience is the first thing you’ll notice here. There’s the big comfy counches in the waiting area and the decoration makes it feel like you’re outside (which is always fun). The place itself is pretty small, but a bunch of strategically placed mirrors will fool you into thinking otherwise.
The menu has all kinds of goodies on it. Ranging from sandwiches for a few bucks to seafood entrees for $20+. I wasn’t too hungry so I opted for the Cuban Sandwich and Empanada. You can easily have a $6 or $40 meal here. If Rachel Ray came here for her $40 a day show, she’d get one of the sandwiches ;)
There were tons of other things on the menu I wanted to try so hopefully I can come back sometime.
Dishes I tried:
Cuban Sandwich
Ham, pork and cheese nestled in a perfectly toasted roll. Not a huge sandwich, but a good balance of each ingredient. The soft yet sligtly crispy roll was really nice.
Ground Beef Empanada
When they say “ground beef”, that’s what they mean – it was just a bunch of ground beef stuffed inside. Could have used more taste though…
Cuba Libre (Rum & Coke)
Nothing too spectacular…I think my expectations were too high. I got normal coke after this :)

lively cuban in bucktown
think jungle animal prints, big green plants, dim light setting w/a cozy bar, dining area, and waiting area that are all jam-packed — and you’ve got cafe laguardia on a saturday night. this place was bustling! i’m so glad that we came for dinner at an early time (6PM).
overall, i was very happy w/my dining experience here, and would definitely consider returning.
prices are wide-ranging & unbelievably reasonable. if you’re on a budget or wanting to splurge, you’ll find something. the food itself was good, the atmosphere was loud and festive, and the service was friendly.
Dishes I tried:
Roast Pork Sandwich
a long baguette cut in half and filled with a good amount of roast pork and lots of grilled onions. for the price, it’s quite the deal. i felt the roast pork was a little lacking in flavor, but i was also not too hungry so that might have affected my tastebuds.
Wildberry Daiquiri
refreshing, sweet, and full of berrilicious flavor. it wasn’t watered down, or too sweet – but just right. i slurped this drink down like no tomorrow.
Melango Colada
another refreshingly sweet & fruity drink. you could barely taste the alcohol, and all the fruit flavors hit you in waves as you gulp this drink down. a really interesting and different kind of cocktail.

Cafe Laguardia
On the front door of Cafe Laguardia – it claims “Exotic Cuban Food” and the word exotic definitely stands out as you enter to see animal print clad sofas awaiting you in the front of the restaurant. The food was pretty good, they definitely know how to make spicey pulled pork and their counch soup is a definite must try but if their service is as bad as it was on a Monday night, I don’t think I will be back here anytime soon. We came and asked for a table for six and our host told us it would only be about ten minutes. After sitting there for twenty five minutes and seeing other parties of two and three get seated before our party, my friend had to track down our host himself since we had not seen him since the time we had requested our table. Once we were finally seated, our waitress seemed clueless about waiting on tables, and our appetizers came out at the same time as our entrees.
Dishes I tried:
Pulled Pork Special
I wish that every pulled pork sandwich could taste like this. This pulled pork entree came with rice and beans on the side with a side of lettuce. The pork was spicey and sweet and the kick doesn’t even hit you until you have already eaten your first bite. Be aware, this is definitely not a dish for people who don’t like spicey food!
Conch Soup
This is a must have! It is like creamy clam chowder – only with generous pieces of conch – and it comes in a really cool soup bowl!
Cuban Nachos
The Cuban Nachos were really good! Beef (or whatever meat you choose) guac, sour cream, tomatoes are carefully layered onto a medium size piece of fried tortilla. Unlike regular nachos, with these nachos, each bite is covered with ALL of the yummy nacho ingredients! The salsa also has a nice kick at the end as well.
