Not your typical Chicago deep dish pizza

If you are a pizza lover this place is a must-try for its uniqueness alone. They take a bowl, place cheese at the bottom, then sauce, sausages, and huge whole mushrooms, then dough at the top. After it’s cooked, it’s flipped right-side up onto your plate by your server.

The place also has a bit of history. It’s located across the street from where the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre occured.

Decor/Ambiance: Very warm, earthy, brick and wood decor, with plenty of booths. There is usually a long wait as the place fills up fast.

Service. Very good, consistent over several occasions.

Would I go here again? Yes

Come in half-pound and one-pound choices. The half-pound is enough for most people. Lots of cheese, and the mushrooms are very good.

Very good, generous amount, and comes with Italian, poppyseed, or garlic dressings.

A must-try, round garlic topped bread is great as an appetizer.

Even if you don’t have room for dessert, at least share this Italian ice cream made with rum, crushed macaroons, and toasted almonds.

Unique, but not nearly the best

I’ll definitely give this place points for unique pizzas. They bake the pizza in a ceramic bowl with the crust on top and then flip it over onto your plate. It’s like a chicken pot pie, but pizza. It sounded so neat that I think my expectations were too high. It tasted good, but nothing special good.

The oven grinders (sandwiches) are huge. They looked twice as large as the pizzas. If you have a few people in your party, I recommend having some try the oven grinders for variety. You should also order the antipasto (if you like italian cold cuts) and mediterranean bread.

The decor reminds you of a log cabin and it’s very cozy. It’s not too large though so be wary of the wait.

Some tips if you’re going here:

  • Parking may be tough. We were able to find some after circling, but they have $8 valet if you’re inpatient.
  • When you put your name down, you’re putting it down in the host’s head. I guess he has an amazing memory :) So don’t worry when he just says “Ok, wait over there”.

The only real choices you get are meat or veggie sauce. I was hoping for more meat and a better texture. It had a uncrispy crust with a bunch of meat sauce and layer of thick cheese.

This large pita-like bread is very tasty. It’s light, flavorful and addicting. Get it!

A plate full of italian cold cuts, cheese, yummy meatballs, cold veggies and olives. It’s fun to pick at all the different things. They recommend you get it with the bread, but I think it’s a waste of the bread’s taste to eat it together.

Amazingly tasty veggie sandwich…probably because there’s a thick layer of cheese :)

a different kind of pizza

located on the bottom floor of a lincoln park home, chicago pizza & oven grinder exudes a warm & cozy ski-lodge feel w/all the dark brown wood beams and booths. it’s a casual setting appropriate for families, big groups, or couples.

here you’ll find a different take on your traditional flat bread pizza – a pot pie pizza. it’s a fun idea, and neat for its novelty, but in the end…i prefer my deep dish chicago pizza.

i came here on a saturday night for dinner, and it was super packed, but the line moved fast and there’s a bar area where you can wait.

i wouldn’t have any problem eating here again, but it’s not a place that i would get cravings for.

if one thing were to bring me back, it’d be this bread! best dish of the night, hands down. i highly recommend it.

it was just ok – super heavy on the sauce & cheese. i’d probably prefer the pot pie over this grinder. although, i think i could get 3 meals out of this sandwich – it was ginormous!

This place has longer lines than a trip to the Field Muse...

This place has longer lines than a trip to the Field Museum…but it’s worth it. There are no reservations, and the person working the front desk doesn’t even write anything down, just remembers you by face. Once seated in very old, wooden booths they bring the paper menu. The salads are taller than they are wide, the mediterranean bread is amamzing, and their pizzas look like little upside-down pot pies. Just a great Chicago original that everyone should check out.
