I probably shouldn't, but I'll be back
This place is what Mexican should be. Not that overpriced stuff downtown. Cheap, greasy and tasty. It’s a family run restaurant that feels homey with all the family pictures around. The decor is very down to earth and make it feel authentic.
The food is cheap. If you only have about $5, you’ll eat well, or you can go for some of the fancier dishes that can go up to the upper teens like the whole snapper.
When you sit down you get some tasty and shiny chips and salsa, carrots and peppers, and a plate of beans and meat with a corn tortilla (no idea what it’s called). I had the nachos dias to start and the tamales ($5 for 4) plate for my entree. Man I was stuffed afterward and very satisfied.
It’s definitely worth the drive in my book. You’ll make up the gas money in extra food and it’s byob.

NACHOS DIAS
Comes in 6 or 12. It’s like a bunch of mini-quesadillas topped with guac and sour cream. Very tasty and the sour cream makes it refreshing.
-
TAMALES
4 tamales with a side of rice and the most interesting beans I’ve ever tasted. The beans were refried but it tasted like there was definiteliy some meat or fat mixed in. I was so addicted I just scarfed down the whole mound and then proceeded to drinnk alot of water since it was so dense. The tamales were good and fresh tasting.

greasy homemade goodness
after reading the glowing reviews, i finally made my way down to this homie mexican restaurant. if you like no frills, authentic, homestyle mexican cuisine at low low prices, then nuevo leon is your place. our food came out almost immediately after we ordered, and boy was it greasy! the deep fry oil that our chips were cooked in was glistening on our chips, and also on the hard shells of my tacos.
plenty of locals at nuevo leon (always a good sign). service was less than stellar, but no bother to me.

TACOS
3 moderate sized tacos for $5?! unbelievable i must say. the taco shells are shiny from being freshly deep-fried, and there’s plenty of variety offered for the inside goods. not the tastiest tacos i’ve had, but there was a homestyle feel to it that made up for it.

NACHOS DIAS
3.5 stars. this is really 6 wet quesadillas pie slices soaking in a watery tomato puree w/sour cream and guacamole lopped on top. definitely something i’ve never tried or even heard of before. it was quite irresistable, and we gobbled them up.

A Pilsen gem!
I can’t rave about this place enough. It looks unassuming, and when I went, it was full of people quietly chatting over their late lunch – who would guess that they have some of the most amazing Mexican food ever?
When we first sat down, the waitress brought us an amuse-bouche of a meatball and a small slice of potato. The meat was absolutely perfect and the broth they sat in, remarkable. I’m not going to lie, I dipped the chips they brought us into it.
Anyway, I’ll go on more about the food below.
The service was a little spotty, but like I cared. I was too busy drooling. Besides, once we actually ordered the food, it was out in literally 5 minutes.
Also, my friend and I ate big lunches, drank horchata and we spent only $20 total, including a nice tip.

Flautas
Nicely fried flautas with a good amount of cheese. Came with a generous serving of guacamole.

BISTEC A LA MEXICANA
This is the dish I have to rave over. The tortillas were homemade and tasted amazing — dough-y and fresh. The beef was as tender as you could possibly want and the flavor was out of this world. It was one of those food moments where you actually close your eyes and sigh. Get it. Get it. Get it.
-
HORCHATA
Yummy! It’s a Mexican rice drink flavored with cinnamon and very refreshing. Everyone in the restaurant was drinking it.
