Philly it ain't

After reading so much concerning the hot subs here, I decided I had to try one for myself. I ordered the #56, the “Big Kahuna Cheese Steak” and let me tell you what! It WAS a Big Kahuna Cheese Steak!!!
I stood there at the counter, talking to one of the girls while the other one made my Sub. I had ordered the Sub with out jalapeƱos as I preferred to have it the way a Philly Cheese Steak was originally made.
As she placed the meat on the grill I was shocked as I had expected generic Steak’ums based on the reviews I had read before. The meat that was used was no where near to Steak’um mediocrity but actual marbled steak. Sweet!!!
Onions and Peppers, Steak and Fresh sliced provolone combined on the grill to create a tantalizing aroma that had my mouth watering while I waited. The girl on the grill chopped and diced the meat and cheese better than a Chef at Benihana’s! She piled the fixings onto a sliced roll of fresh baked bread, wrapped it in tinfoil, grabbed a bag and popped it open on the counter, slid the sandwich int o the bag and gave it to me with a bright smile.
I’m telling you what, I love the service at this place. I think next time I’ll try one of their Sub’s in a Tub.

#56 - Big Kahuna Cheese Steak
BIG Kahuna does not describe the amount of fixings in this sub. The meat was tasteful and tender and everything combined into a flavor fest that had my taste buds nearly overwhelmed with wonderful tastes and textures.

Jersey Mike's: Cold is Bold

Forget about the hot subs at Jersey Mike’s. Don’t go there. Get yourself a nice, Giant-sized cold sub, done up the Mike’s way. That red wine vinegar invades every crevice of your freshly baked bun, making magic in your merry mouth.
Today the restaurant was packed packed packed. The staff was firing on all cylinders, and the fountain drinks were a-flowing. This is how you should be able to enjoy a submarine sandwich.

Club Sub (Giant)
This sub is large enough to fill a Matt Hasselbeck-sized hunger. Done Mike’s Way, this is the perfect start to a working man’s week.

Sweet meat and awesome services
I used to be a Subway Fanatic… That was till I visited Jersey’s Mike one day.
We walked in the the girls behind the counter were very vocal and happy, welcoming us to the store and all. We placed our orders and then the girls went to work. Imagine my surprise to see them slicing the meat right there before it went into the sandwich. Fresh sliced deli meat and cheese. A sandwich lovers paradise.
The meat was fresh (Noticed that they roast the roast beef there themselves), the cheese was fresh and the fixings were fresh as well. The grill work I saw going on was handled by one lady and she was cooking 6 sandwiches at once and had that grill a going!
The place is well lit, very clean and everything was working, including the soda dispenser.

Overpriced Mediocrity
I have had several good experiences with Jersey Mike’s Lynnwood location in the past: meaty club sandwiches beyond compare. This ~1 year old Mukilteo location left me with a different taste in my mouth.
Walking in with a pal, I was greeted warmly by the three young ladies on staff — a nice start to the experience. The enthusiasm of the staff was fairly infectious. They informed me that since I “brought a rookie” I “get a cookie”; bonus! My lunchtime was looking up.
After ordering my sandwich, however, I looked over to the fountain drinks — Pepsi had an “Out of Order” note taped to it. A Pepsi tech was said to be on the way, but no temporary alternative was offered. Disappointing.
My order was then messed up — I ordered a giant sub and they brought out a regular. Hmm… they brought another half but this is still disappointing. In addition, as I sat down, I began to notice how cold it was in the place. Turn on the dang heat would ya!

Jersey Mike's Famous Philly
Biting into the cheesesteak, it seemed hot and steamy, and fairly flavorful. But as I made my way through the sandwich, it just became an ordeal to finish the thing. Too many peppers, not nearly enough flavor — a rather bland sandwich. Perhaps the Chipotle version would be a better bite.

The Original Italian
This is your run-of-the-mill loaded Italian sandwich — except it wasn’t that loaded. For $10 you expect man-sized meat stacks, not the pitiful, paltry layers displayed between these buns. The flavor was good, for what there was, but the volume was not enough for a man-sized hunger.

Blimpie Wannabe? No Cheesesteak!
A clean deli atmosphere here. The gals running the counter were very friendly and had lots of suggestions for what they liked. Maybe a bit aggressive; I like to peruse the menu and decide for myself. I can ask for help or suggestions if I want them. At least they seemed happy. Happy employees is part of the equation for a quality meal.
The pepsi fountain was out of commission, and they didn’t do much to aleviate that problem. We’ll discount you on a 2-litre pepsi? Nope, I just went with water.
I appreciated the 2 tv’s with different channels going. They weren’t loud and obnoxious and there was a decent rock radio station on.
Besides my italian, I was able to have a piece of a Famous Philly that Josh shared. I’ve been to Philadelphia and had the best cheesteaks ever at Geno’s: http://www.genosteaks.com/home1.html
Let’s just say that the cheesesteak here was a serious afront to true philly cheesesteaks. Mike’s- Leave the cheesesteaks to the pro’s!

The Original Italian (Giant)
I expected a magnificent monstersized sub sandwich extravaganza for $10.00. The sandwich was dressed “Mike’s way” lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, mustard, oil, vinegar, oregano, salt, pepper. The flavor was excellent with provolone, ham, proscuittini, cappacuolo, salami, and pepperoni. The problem was they were skimpy on the meat. Thin sliced meat has great flavor and texture, but usually you get short-changed by inexperienced Deli folks or cheapskates. For $10.00, that sandwich should’ve been packed. The bread was a touch dry.
If you want value, classic italian deli flavor, go to Blimpie.
