With a gorgeous view of Lake Monona, this little coffee shop restaurant has a lot going for it. The coffee is Alterra and excellent, while the food is mostly local, and mostly organic. Even the milk is from a local and organic farm. They make lots of tasty pastries for breakfast-on-the-go, but if you have time for sitting down, the waffles are quite good. On a weekend, you will find the sitting area virtually full most of the morning. Lunch always has at least one soup, and the bluebird sandwich is a surprisingly yummy combination of chicken salad and blueberries. If you don’t like coffee, or if you bring non-caffeinated friends with you, there is a nice selection of organic soda and juice as well as cocoa and steamers. A play area set aside for young ones guarrantees a family-friendly atmosphere.
I would not have thought of putting together chicken, walnuts, dried blueberries, cheddar and salad greens, but it is really yummy. The chips are super crispy, and so not my favorite, but the sandwich more than makes up for it. I love stopping here in the summer and getting a blue bird with an iced chai or a vanilla steamer, and sitting outside enjoying the view of the lake.
