Chinese in the American tradition

I enjoyed Tai Tung. The restaurant is laid out well for business meetings or perhaps clandestine trysting: most of the tables are in pleasant cubicles, with half the tables on a lower floor. The decor is pretty tired – it has a late-seventies feel to it with a griminess to it that distinctly recalled NYC’s Chinatown.

The dishes were not especially authentic. Though they were nicely done. The service was solicitous and helpful, while very Chinese-American.

As noted above, a great place to go for a business meeting when the focus is getting some work done over a decent meal. Don’t expect to impress anyone with this choice.

What I ate:
  • ***

I asked to have the dish extra spicy. The result was flavorful, but nothing to get excited about.

  • ****

Nice texture and flavor. Definitely a great accompaniment for a heavily flavored entree.

Extras:

Tai Tung, tongue pleasure

This restaurant has been around for a couple of generations. It has its own parking lot a few steps down the block. This is a real plus in the International District, as circling for parking can take forever.
(You may have to ignore the rif raf that are in abundance at certain times.)
This restaurant is very old school with a depth of menu as well as specials in abundance every day. They are plastered on the walls on white sheets of paper in Chinese as you walk in the door.
The service is friendly and respectful.
We had egg flower soup and split it, quite satisfying for 2.
We split a Kung Pao chicken and a shrimp dish, I can’t recall the name as my guest ordered it, it did have garlic black bean sauce though…
I ordered the walnut prawns last time I was there and it was top flight.
The sticker shock was almost non existent as 2 entrees; soup came to around 20 beans!

What I ate:

Great portion size, pleasing mix of crunchy and soft textures, sweetness and prawnieness

Extras:
