Excellent deep dish pizza, and affordable too!...
Excellent deep dish pizza, and affordable too! I went to school in the Chicago area and have had some of the best deep dish pizzas there, and I really enjoyed Little Star.
The pizza texture itself feels a little lighter to me than traditional deep dish – not as much cheese, not as much sauce. Felt more California style – fresher and crisper ingredients, not the heavy Italian sausages and meats that I’ve usually had.
Would have to say the crust at Zachary’s is still better, and the sauce at Patxi’s is better, but overall, you get a good pie at a good price. Can be very crowded and difficult to get a table, but worth it.
when zachary's is just too far away...
Now, I grew up in new york city (home of the best damn pizza in the world!!!), and I love my pizza. Having recently moved to the Yay Area! ...I was psyched about everything, except the pizza. All I knew about California pizza is that you guys threw some weird shiz on your pizzas… artichokes? guacamole? carne asada?
Ok ok, so on to the important stuff – turns out there’s some pretty darn tasty pizza in the bay (and not all that weird either!), and Little Star is a nice spot for getting your fix of big-ass Chicago style pizza. I’ve got to compare this place to Zachary’s, and unfortunately – it doesn’t hold up, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good! I think my only real complaint is the hours. Want Little Star for lunch? I don’t think so! They don’t open until 5. If I had a myFaves pizza 5, Little Star would definitely take a spot.

Better than Zachary's . . . . ?
Having gone to school at Berkeley, I’ve always been a fan of Zachary’s – famous for their deep dish pizzas. After moving to San Francisco, lots of friends recommended Little Star as having similar quality pizza. I’ve been there a few times now, and dare I say I think I like it even better than Zachary’s! The kicker has to be the cornmeal in the crust, which gives the pizza a nice satisfying crunch still, even with all those toppings stuffed deep inside (my favorite is the signature ‘Little Star’). The place is always busy, even late on a Sunday night we waited forever (almost an hour) – mainly since we had 5 people, and there aren’t many bigger tables there. I’d recommend going with a smaller group, or the take out option, which I think is what I’d like to do next time so we don’t have to wait so long. Be aware not only could there be a long wait, but the pizza takes a while to come out too, so be prepared – we always order the Caprese Salad and Spicy Chicken Wings to hold us over till the food comes. The atmosphere is San Francisco hip, with a well stocked bar, and very dim lighting – I can barely see my pizza before I wolf it down. Definitely a place to try out if you like the deep dish style pizza!

Little Star deep dish pizza - Spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onions, garlic
My favorite pizza at Little Star! A little bit too garlicy this past time I had it, but usually just the right blend of flavors that’s just delish.

Mediterranean Chicken - Chicken breast, artichoke hearts, red bell peppers, green olives, onions, fe
This pizza is tasty too. Nice flavor and not too overpowering .

Classic deep dish pizza - Sausage, mushrooms, green bell peppers and onions
Not too much of a fan of the Classic, the sausage taste is real strong, which some people might like, but just not for me.
-
Caprese Salad
Simple but always tasty, a nice light starter before your pizza arrives.
-
Spicy Chicken Wings
Basic chicken wings, nothing fancy, but good tasting wings.
Little Star Pizza
Little Star has delicious deep dish pizza and surprisingly, one of the most delicious green salads I have ever had. The food is straightforward and executed very well. The atmosphere and crowd is a bit hipster-ish, but well worth it for the yummy food. Be prepared for a wait.
