Brunch, the best of both worlds.

It was late August when two friends and I found ourselves meandering down a street in Bar Harbor, ME hankering some brunch. Now, my friends and I aren’t particularly “brunch people” but something about the eccentric town we were walking through--or the fact that we’d woken up too late for breakfast--had stirred a desire for a tasty morning meal. Just then, we noticed a sign pointing down an alley. On it were written three simple words: Cafe This Way. At the end of the alley was a charming house surrounded by flowers and shrubs that sported a large deck. We walked past the large group of diners who were finishing their breakfast alfresco and were seated at a small table in what seemed to be a renovated house that was both quirky and charming. The menu was right in our budget (between $4-8) and sported some traditional breakfast choices with some interesting twists. After looking over the daily specials and nine different omelet choices I settled on their Eggs Benedict. Instead of the traditional variation of canadian bacon, I opted for smoked trout. They also offer Benedicts with smoked salmon, tomato, spinach, and artichoke hearts, as well as veggie bacon, mushrooms, and onions. My companions chose a Monte Kristo and a breakfast burrito larger than my forearm. The food came in a reasonable time and i was not disappointed. The hollandaise was rich and tart and the combination with the smoked trout was an improvement on canadian bacon (sorry purists). My dining companion’s Monte Kristo was large enough that he brought it with him and had it for late afternoon snack—making the rest of us truly enviable at around 3 pm. I did note that Cafe This Way is open only for breakfast and dinner and so there’s no tasty lunch option. Also, since it’s located in Bar Harbor (a summer vacation spot) it’s only open for business between April and October. If, however, you are vacationing on the coast of Maine, I definately suggest planning a trip to Bar Harbor to have a truly inspired brunch.
