Overpriced and a little boring
Bella Donna came recommended, and overall the food is fine, but it’s a bit boring and too expensive.
We were seated in the rear room of the modern, somewhat spare-feeling restaraunt. The front room was brighter and much more open feeling — I think that would make for a better experience.
The restaraunt promotes itself as Fine Dining, and it sort of feels like American Italian food, circa my grandparents’ generation, maybe. I really wanted a little bit more variety from the menu, which is prominently stocked with lasagne and veal/chicken/eggplant parm.
The food was all right — not objectionable, but aside from the really enjoyable antipasti for two, nothing stood out. It was just, well, kind of boring. Finally, for the overall impression that the food made on the two of us, everything struck me as about $3 overpriced. My suggestion would be that Bella Donna forego the salad or soup that’s included with each entree and knock the price off a few bucks, and then think about Italian food that’s a little bit more interesting. If we want a salad or soup we’ll order it.

Pasta Puttanesca
Puttanesca should be redolent with olive and have a hefty spiciness. This one had neither. Rather than a big dose of caper and olive, it had sauteed zuccini slices. Even the nice chunks of sausage were pretty bland. Maybe just a bad night for the puttanesca? Served with rotini (twists).
Also, the full name on the menu is a little silly: Marco Polo della Puttanesca. “Marco Polo of the Puttanesca?”

Pasta with clams
I enjoyed this, but again it wasn’t a particular stand out. Your choice of white or red sauce (I took the marinara) over linguine, with a nice portion of in-shell clams.

Antipasti
Along with the tiramisu, this was probably the best part of the night. It was a bit more like a composed salad than what I envision antipasti to be — thin slices of proscuitto and salami were rolled around slices of cheese and olives, with slices of tomato, red onion, and cucumber drizzled with a tasty vinaigrette. Really tasty, and presented really nicely, even if it didn’t have some of the things that I really love to see in antipasti, like roasted red peppers and pepperoncini.

Tiramisu
Yum. Creamy, rich tiramisu. Just what it should have been. A really nice way to finish off an otherwise okay meal.
