I had a much better time at Mei Wah and the food was excellent. The quality of meat used in their dishes is better than many Asian eateries.

What I ate:

Tasty hot tempura roll with spicy sauce

Great food - awful service

My two stars are only for the food at this restaurant. I have ordered tasty take-out previously at this Mei Wah and thought I would take a friend to try the dine-in experience. The following is the letter I sent to Mei Wah:

"-Good day-

I wanted to send a note describing the recent experience at the Chevy
Chase Mei Wah restaurant. I have eaten take-out from the restaurant
many times and was excited about taking a friend for dinner on a
Saturday evening. However, the experience turned out to be less than
desired.

We began our dinner seated at a dirty table with a couple shrimp on the floor. After about ten to fifteen minutes, a man walked up and asked “Are you ready to order?”. I would like to tell you his name, but he never informed of us of that information. Waiting for quite a while, we ordered our drinks, appetizer and dinner. The drinks arrived and
shortly thereafter our sushi appetizer.

All of the food on our visit was great, as I have come to expect from Mei Wah. However, the quality of service declined as the night proceeded. Our waiter never returned to our table after taking away the appetizer. Our food was delivered by someone else and we would have liked another beverage but this was not an option. I had a to-go order to place and had to flag down another waiter who assisted & brought the order to our table. The waiter never checked after we received our entrees to ensure our satisfaction.

As we were finished with our meals, the manager arrived at our table and asked “Can I get you any more food?”. I replied that we were quite satisfied with the food and he stated “I see you have some plates. I will get my staff to remove these from the table.” I found his manner rather off-putting and he never asked if we were pleased with the service or the evening overall. His hands were free but he didn’t take away the plates.

The waiter brought the check and we were ready to leave. We left cash on the table and as I was getting up to leave a woman rushed over saying “Good night, Good night.” I had to sit back down in order for her to grab the book in front of me. She then turned around and opened the
book. I found this very rude."

I received the following response promptly:

"My name is Larry La. I am the Manager at Meiwah restaurant in Chevy Chase. I am so sorry to learn of your very unpleasant experience about the service at Meiwah last Saturday. I did print out your very detailed note to have a very serious meeting with my wait staff as well as my Assistant Managers.

I apologize for the unacceptable and less than desired service from my staff and personally take the responsibility of what happened that night to you and your friend. I would like to invite you back for a dinner or a take-out meal if you prefer that way to express my sincere apology to you in person. Please let me know when you would like to do that.

Thank you so much for letting me know our mistake. Customer satisfaction is always our goal. Thanks also for your business. Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Larry La

I am satisfied I received a response from Mr. La and am returning for another visit.

At this point, I can recommend the food but not the service.
