From the Restaurant

Now in its 27th year, Venezia is an Italian restaurant that has become a Berkeley institution acclaimed for its great food, value, and atmosphere. Venezia's menu features a wide assortment of fresh pasta, meats and fish, a moderately priced wine list, full bar and weekly specials created under the able hand of chef Cindy Deetz. All this is served in a charming interior that invokes an Italian piazza with floor-to-ceiling murals, a central fountain, hanging laundry, wrought iron balconies, and even roosting faux pigeons! Venezia is child friendly and has a warm, personable staff. Parking is available behind the restaurant and, at night, next door in the AAA lot. Venezia is one of the few restaurants in town that can accommodate large parties with ease. We have a private dining room that can seat 25 comfortably, and the main dining room seats parties up to 40 in a bustling, festive atmosphere.

Nice return to Italian

Venezia was a nice return into Italian food, as it was a while since I’ve eat Italian. It was a lot nicer than i expected when i walked in, and had amusing decor – like pigeons, a laundry line, and just an Italian feel.

The food was kind of expensive, but that seems to be the usual case with Italian. The wait for the food also took a while, but its a fancy place, and I don’t usually expect to come out to quickly in a nice place. The sweet potato soup was a nice starter, albeit not spectacular looking. When the food itself finally came out, it looked and smelled delicious. I was happy that we had 5 people and we all ordered stuff i wanted to try (there are still more i want to try though =D ). Despite some criticism for ignoring the Spaghetti alla Carbonara (it has egg and bacon) and ordering a meatless eggplant dish (I think the name is somewhere around eggplant rollatine), I did not regret my order. The cheese in the eggplant made is especially good. The other dishes were also quite tasty, with the Bobotie the most interesting. Overall, a good experience.

What I ate:
  • *****

If you like eggplant parmesan, like i do, then this is a tastier version. Better cheese, and quality eggplant.

  • ****

A strange combo of meat and other stuff, forming a meat-pie like thing.

  • ****

A giganto meatball (2) of goodness

  • *****

The chicken was tender and good. The cheese ravioli with it acts as a nice thing to have on the side.

quality italian and fake pigeons!

I went to Venezia with the family, and they had some delicious food there. It is a noticeable street along University Ave, since it has huge windows, so everyone can see inside. The place is decorated so that people feel like they are outside. The walls are painted and there are structures which are shaped like buildings. It was really neat, especially since there were fake pigeons on top of the fake structures.

Anyways, the food here is excellent. All the dishes come with salad or soup, which is nice for an Italian place. Their menu is not as extensive as some other Italian places, but all their dishes sound fabulous. We had trouble figuring out what we want. I ordered the cannellonis, and it comes with two large ones. They are filling, rich, and full of flavor. I also got to try some other dishes, which were all great. The downside to this place is that you have to wait a really long time for food, and it is sort of pricey. Other than that, I thought this place had excellent food overall. The waitress was also really nice and gave us some recommendations. I wasn’t sure whether to give 4 or 5, because it is probably more around 4.5 in my opinion.

What I ate:
  • *****

These were great, and I loved the sauce they gave. It might be somewhat rich for some though. The cannellonis were filled with chicken and other goodies.

  • ****

A lamb stew dish which comes with tons of other stuff. It was more like a pie type dish, and it was really good, of what I tried. I didn’t order the dish, but it was good. Might sort of weird to some people.

  • ****

Juicy chicken that was braised in carrot juice! It was very tender, and full of flavor. Also comes with a couple ravioli, which were also delicious.

  • ***

If you like almonds at all, you will like this dessert, since you can definitely taste the almond. Also has a tasty cream on top of it. It could use some more flavor in my opinion though.
