Worth every penny!

I have loved coming to the Dahlia for years and across a few locations! It’s hard to pick a favorite because the menu is all about what’s in season being served well prepared and presented with dash and class.
I don’t drink but my friends rave about the cocktails. I rave about the desserts.
If you are going out for a nice evening in Seattle or a truly romantic date, this is the place.

Dishes I tried:

The Winter White Salad

This is something you have to be lucky enough to catch when it is available but if you go and it’s on the menu, grab it. The dressing is light and lets the delicate flavor of the “whites” (which would be the greens in any other salad) be the main focus.

beautiful ambience, great food

Everything I’ve heard about Dahlia Lounge has been true.

My experience there was amazing. This is one of my new favorite restaurants in Seattle. One of the best parts about it is the ambience. The place is beautifully decorated and there is a soft glow of candle lights all around. Definetely come here in the evening when you’ll get that full effect.

The presentation of the food was beautiful, service was great, and we loved everything we tried.

I highly recommend this place! Next time I am coming back here for a full dinner rather than appetizers and dessert.

Fries cooked just right. Not too crunchy, not too soft. Comes with a tasty dipping sauce.

Juicy, tender, pretty much everything you want in a mussel dish.

The best dessert I tried that evening. Delicate, tender pear lightly fried in a tempura batter and served with a scoop of ice cream.

Good but nothing special

Went on 11/17/2009 (Tuesday) for Dine Around Seattle (DAS).

Ordered mussels, pork loin, and creme caramel. (The first two from the “And Now…” menu, the last from “Through the Years…”. You can mix & match.)

The mussels were good but nothing special. The pork loin was mediocre—at the very edge of being too dry—with occasional bits of crispy fatty goodness. Creme caramel somewhat good but portion too big, i.e. ceased to be enjoyable halfway through. Of course, I just stop eating at that point, but I feel like the portion they give you should be perfect.

All-in-all, a very average restaurant, not fantastic, but perfectly edible. A little disappointed because I was expecting a lot (never been to a Tom Douglas restaurant before), but it ended being very average.

However, the ambiance was very nice, I loved the decor, the paper lamps were absolutely lovely. They were doing a 20th anniversary raffle this month (win a taco dinner for 25 at your home, thrown by Tom Douglas himself), so if you really want 25 people in your house eating a taco dinner and a chance to meet Tom Douglas, then better go this month.

Dahlia Lounge is my 2nd place choice for this year’s DAS so far (Only been to 3: 1st – ART, 2nd – Dahlia Lounge, 3rd – Ray’s Boathouse).

Dishes I tried:

Mussels

This dish is the “Taylor Shellfish Mussels, Pumpkin, Fennel, Coconut-Curry Broth,” part of the Dine Around Seattle “And Now…” menu.

After the mussels at Brasa about a month ago, it could be that I’m ruined for life. Before, I would have thought this dish at Dahlia Lounge was perfectly tasty, but now, no more. While the plentiful bowl contained large and tender mussels, they did have a slightly fishy smell. The broth was good, but not blow-you-out-of-the-water good. I would never have been able to guess that it was a “coconut curry broth”—it tasted like neither coconut, nor curry. It was just sort of a savory clear broth. All the same, this was probably my favorite course at Dahlia Lounge this outing, but I feel like it could have been improved.

Pork Loin

This is the “Carlton Farms Boneless Pork Loin, Celeriac ~ Apple sauce, Braised Savoy Cabbage, Grain Mustard” dish from the Dine Around Seattle menu called “And Now…”

The pork loin came sitting on a bed of cabbage that was way too sour, and generally unpleasant. There wasn’t enough sweetness in the apple sauce on top of the pork loin to offset the sour cabbage. The pork itself was okay, just on the very verge of being too dry, and a little tasteless. Along the edges, near the fat, was tasty, buttery and crispy, but that comprised only a few bites of the entire pork loin.

Tom’s World Famous Crème Caramel

(Btw, for anyone keeping track, I am rating this one good even though I rated the mussels average though the mussels was my favorite because I happen to be a fan of mussels.)

The creme caramel was smooth, just the right texture. The taste was not too rich, not too sweet. However, halfway through the dessert, I was pretty much tired of it. There wasn’t anything there that was interesting. There was what looked like a crisped melted-sugar roll thing on top, like a wafer, to give the texture some contrast, but it wasn’t enough of a flavor difference. It was good, but I felt like this dessert could have really shined if there was something more to it.

My first trip to Dahlia Lounge was for my HS senior prom when it was still located at its old location (the current Toi), and have been back many times for special occasions.

The dining room is warm and has nice lighting, plus other nice small touches around the room. I want to fill my pockets with the candies from the entrance. The menu rotates, but in the past, out of all the restaurants I’ve dined in, at Dahlia I have had the best steak and duck dishes, ever. My girlfriend has had the best oysters at Dahlia (though, I think they all taste like the ocean). Their tenderloin pork wasn’t so tender when I sampled it one time, and due to the rotating menu, I haven’t found that steak again, but I’ve always left happy. They are known desserts as well, and operate an adjoining bakery.

The only major demerit that would knock a star off would be because one time my card was charged for not only my dinner, but an adjoining table. To make matters worse, the other table’s bill was about three times my bill! Everything was eventually straightened out, and I believe it was only due to their EFT system being down for the night.

Otherwise, the food, atmosphere and the service is excellent.

The Dahlia Lounge is a great restaurant. The crab cakes are definitely a dish to try. Although they are small they are worth every bite. The salad alongside the crab cakes is also very good. The best part of the Dahlia Lounge are the donuts and the coconut cream pie. If you are still craving the sweet goodies hop on next door to their bakery and bring some home.

Pricey, but Dahlia is VERY good. James Beard Foundation Award Winner. Doesn’t always make it the best (didn’t like Chef Mavro’s at Oahu that much, and that was a James Beard Foundation winner). I would say for appetizer to try Dungeness Crab, but understand the portions are quite tiny for the appetizers. The wood grilled alaska caught king Salmon was absolutely delicious. Also, the seared sea scallops, tender, grilled to perfection, not too rare (which tastes sea-ish), and not over-cooked (which tastes rubbery). Scallops are just sweet, and goes well with the cornmeal johnny cake (i almost asked for a second one, but didn’t). Highly recommended, and you can book through opentable.com and earn points at the same time!
