From the Restaurant

Known for generous portions, this Bay Area treasure is a retro soda fountain that showcases daily ice cream production and fountain sundae making.

Founded in 1894, Fentons Creamery is a landmark institution that has served generations its famous handcrafted ice creams and sauces. The fresh Crab Salad sandwich is the house specialty, best when accompanied by a thick shake!

Our ice cream sundaes are world famous – the Black & Tan Sundae is our signature item, made with one of the many ice cream flavors invented by Melvin Fenton – Toasted Almond.

Fentons Creamery offers a wonderful, hearty breakfast on Friday, Saturday & Sunday! Serving thick Belgian waffles (best topped with ice cream), Pancakes, French toast, Crab Omelets and Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, savory turkey sausage…and so much more!

Featured on the History Channel, the Food Network, USA Today and Zagat, Fentons offers ice cream production tours by appointment.

Hungry? Want ice cream? Come here!

This is one place that you can get full off of a dessert dish only. Man. I remember going to this place while I was attending Cal. I came here hungry with a bunch of friends late at night. I came out of it FULL. I almost felt guilty of getting full off of a dessert, but hey, food’s food. :)

It’s an awesome place to just casually come for a dessert. But here are few things to remember:
  1. Share a single dish with 2-3 other people if you’re going to eat it as a dessert.
  2. If you’re not going to share, then make sure you are seriously hungry.
  3. Make sure that you won’t feel guilty eating a buttload of tasty bad stuff. ;)

Oh my gosh that was a motherload. Not sure if they still have the same menu after it got remodeled, but when I had it, I was full (and learned about a place called heaven).

mountains of ice cream

Fenton’s is a popular ice cream joint, which loves to serve huge portions of….ice cream. They also serve lunch, dinner, and apparently breakfast too, but the ice cream is the main attraction. And since they are integral to the experience and have such a great reputation, Fenton’s charges a lot for their ice cream and sundaes. The ice cream is very delicious though, and you do come with a huge amount of ice cream. They can easily serve as a meal for a person.

There is also something called the Fenton’s Challenge, where you have to eat like 3 pounds of ice cream, not including the ridiculous amount of toppings in 20 minutes. I decided against it, but it is quite a site to see. A couple friends did manage to beat the challenge, which is impressive.

I’d recommend going at least once despite the prices since it is an interesting ice cream experience, and the ice cream tastes good. It gets crowded though, so you might have to wait a while.

What I ate:

Very tasty ice cream, served on top of a brownie. Comes with lots of fudge and whipped cream. It was good and filling, but I felt the brownie could have tasted better.

  • *****

An absolutely ridiculous amount of ice cream. Only for the adventurous. Five stars for those who truly love ice cream and like challenges.
