Situated on the industrial streets of Tribeca, Dylan Prime is a modern steakhouse (wood-slatted ceiling, moss colored walls), with a hip downtown atmosphere that defies tradition. Dramatic mahogany and glass paneled wine cellars defines the plush, inviting space. Lush velvet menus are an added unexpected touch.

Great Rib-Eye! And great drinks

I’m a carnivore, so I was really looking forward to my steak night out in NYC. I ordered the carpetbagger, which was a cut of filet mignon stuffed with oysters. I was a little disappointed with my dish… I thought the filet was a bit rubbery. However, my boyfriend ordered the rib eye, which was FANTASTIC! Cripsy and juicy, and full of flavor! My boyfriend doesn’t even like steak, but whenever someone tells him they’re making a trip out to NYC, he tells them that they HAVE to get the rib eye at Dylan Prime!

Another nice touch are their dessert cocktails. They have an assortment of “cake-tails” and “pie-tinis” that are basically cocktails that taste like cakes and pies. I got a German Chocolate caketail and another friend got the Amaretto Cheesecake, and both were really good (amaretto cheesecake was better). The friend who recommended this place to me swears by the pietinis though!

Another great touch was that we had early reservations because we were catching an off-Broadway show later that evening, but one of my friends took the wrong subway on the way to the restaurant and ended up in Brooklyn… and ended up being more than an hour late to dinner. However, the wait staff didn’t give us a hard time about it at all, and in fact, kept coming back to check on us to see if we needed anything. I thought their service was pretty good, but the atmosphere was pretty boring. Definitely looked like a business dinner type place. But I would still come back here again!

Just not as tender or flavorful as I would have liked.

Unlike your grandfather’s steakhouse, Dylan Prime has the furniture and feel of the cutting edge contemporary NYC restaurants. But it doesn’t come at the sacrifice of high quality meat and a strong supporting cast of sides and appetizers. I like the New York strip, medium rare. Perfectly browned on the outside, the steak’s juices and flavors have nowhere to go until your first cut.

The fondue is a fun starter if you’re with friends. The sides weren’t memorable. They were somewhere between average and pretty good. I’m fine with that, because to me, there’s nothing more disappointing than a restaurant where the sides are better than the entree.

They also have a pie-tini and cake-tail list. You can probably figure that one out. Bottom line: if you’re craving steak and you’re under 40, head to Dylan Prime.
