one of the better sushi places near uc berkeley

Joshuya is a notable Japanese restaurant because of its delicious food, and also because it seems like one of the few restaurants near campus that actually has patio seating. According to friends, the menu changes a lot, although not for the better since the prices were apparently higher. She said that it used to be much cheaper during the summer, but maybe they raised the prices for oncoming fall semester.

Anyways, I decided to go with the 14 dollar bento box. You get your choice of two entrees and it comes with tempura. The tempura had a bit too much crispy stuff around it, although because of that, it did have a nice crunch to it. Better than a lot of tempura I’ve had overall. The salmon teriyaki I ordered was cooked just right and it had lots of sauce, which is a winner in my book. I also got sashimi, and it came with pretty large pieces, which were all really good, although the salmon was inferior to the tuna. I also ordered a green tea ice cream, which actually tasted like green tea, so that was a success.

The pricing, while apparently raised, still wasn’t too bad, and the food here is better than a lot of Japanese restaurants nearby. I’d recommend people coming to eat here if they are in the neighborhood.

What I ate:
  • ****

Everything was delicious, but I don’t think it was exceptional enough to elevate to 5 star status. Maybe after a few more visits, I might think otherwise.

  • *****

I thought it was creamy and actually had a green tea taste. I wish they gave more than one scoop though, but the amount was reasonable. I liked it a lot.

Best sushi definitely in berkeley possibly california possibly the US possibly the world. Regular japanese dishes also very good! Great service, the sushi chefs are really nice. My favorites are: Joshuya and super crunch rolls, the spicy hot juicy, and the amsterdam. Menu is constantly improving. Rolls are inexpensive for how big and tasty they are!
