Solidly Good Spot

El Centro DF is a great spot on 14th — though it doesn’t look like much from the outside. Inside (and upstairs!), there is a tequileria and a taqueria, where you can get tacos inside, or to go. Apparently, there is also a rooftop bar, but my party didn’t venture up there on our first stop. The decor is funky, but not distracting, though I can certainly see this place packing people in on the weekends. Our waitress was welcoming and knowledgeable — a good combination.

The food was quite good. El Centro DF seems to make a concerted effort to have a lot going on — Nacho Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and good happy hour deals. Our luck, we came during a guacamole festival, and couldn’t resist a sampler. We ordered it mild, and it came with three different guacamoles on mini toastadas. Norteno used chicharron, picked onion, salsa fresco, serrano, queso fresco, and roasted corn. The Sur included grasshoppers (!), tomatillos, cotija cheese, onion, and chile cascabel. The grasshopper seemed a little stale, but that may because I didn’t eat it right away, and it soaked up juice from the guac. The Pacifico had grilled beet, roasted walnut, queso fresco, and diced orange. They were also served with three salsas. Overall, very tasty.

I can’t resist a tamale, so it was appetizers for dinner, for me. The Chicken Tinga Tamales were served with avocado and sweet chipotle sauce — it tasted almost like a sweet taco sauce. Very enjoyable.

I washed it down with a Kiwi Margarita, which I was excited about, but didn’t match up to expectations. It was a good margarita, but the kiwi was overpowered by the lime, so the kiwi really only added texture.

All in all, a good meal. I’ll be going there again, and venturing to the rooftop bar!

Guacamole Sampler

Three different guacamoles, served on tostadas. Perfect for sharing, as it comes with two of each type. Grasshopper wasn’t as scary as I’d thought, but not all that tasty, either (the guac itself was still good).

Chicken Tinga Tamales

Tasty! Not at all spicy, and a good mix of flavors. Wish there were more avocado, though.

Kiwi Margarita

Tasty margarita, but didn’t taste like kiwi.
