El Taco Loco looks like a hole-in-the-wall from the outside and the inside of the restaurant could be nicer, too. All of the meals are served on disposable Styrofoam plates and there is an open salsa bar, which sits out in the open… and sits… and sits all day until someone changes it (and in the time that I have spent there, I have yet to see someone do that. But I am sure they do. They have to, at some point.) The same vinyl table cloths are there every time that I am, and I have to wonder if they have ever been changed. I often find it to be a little chilly or damp in there, like a basement, no matter what season it is.
Despite my negative comments about the general appearance of the restaurant, the food isn’t bad and the prices are decent. You take a menu, decide what you want to order, and then tell the person at the counter before having a seat. The menu features a lot of expected Mexican favourites: quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos, flautas, chimichangas, and then-some. You can order the item by its-self or in a platter with rice and beans. Pretty much any of the above listed can be tailored to suit vegetarians, which is a plus. I often order the cheese enchilada platter, which comes with rice and beans, and my boyfriend orders the rice and bean chimichangas, which I have yet to try but he tells me are pretty good.

12/19/2007This place IS a hole in the wall, in fact, it makes most holes look good. They have not changed the salsa in that little salsa bar since I was about 12 years old and Mom used to take me to New Hope. That was about 20 YEARS AGO. Yummy.
If you like “typical” Cal-Mex food (everything tastes like cumin) and not very fresh at all – the place is ALWAYS EMPTY – how can he keep fresh food ? then go ahead. Since Blue Tortilla came to town, they stole away all of the tourist business.
Oh, and the “nachos” are those generic corn chips covered with cheese wiz. If I wanted this kind of stuff I could probably go to Taco Bell, too.
