Classy/Casual

Bring cash. Lots of cash (or credit cards, no checks). Make reservations. Dress nice (don’t know that there is ‘code’ but the atmosphere and ‘cost’ certainly seem to make it a good idea. Our Charleston buddies were treating – wanting to show us ‘other things’ besides the soul food places! We’ve been to places that are fairly pricey – but when the appetizers are little bitty and the menu price is the amount of a whole meal in some places, I say “bring cash”. The atmosphere is very nice – when you see full place china settings, lovely glassware and cloth (table & napkins) – it gives you a “laid back elegant” feel. I sound like a “country cousin” visiting the big city for first time – but, I’ve been around – from the outside, I was not really prepared for the interior or the menu. Bottom line, it was great service, not “stuffy”, the food good – comfortable and all, just turned out to be more expensive for what you get – not for the “faint of heart” in the pocketbook. I’m harping on that – glad we were not paying, but hated for our friends to spend all that.

Mustard Crusted Flounder

Husband and the others had this. Everyone said they liked it – it looked “interesting” – covered with a sauce and sautéed greens and onions.

Suckling pig

It was another one of those “interesting” plate concoctions…square piece of “pork” on the plate, with sautéed greens and things around it. It’s like when you see cooking “contests” and part of the deal is to make a “pretty plate” .. you don’t get a whole lot of food, but it looks nice. The flavor to this was great – I do not mean to sound unenthusiastic, still just a bit on edge because of the price.

Well-deserved reputation for incredible food

It’s hard to be original about how fabulous this restaurant is — almost everything wonderful has already been said about it, and there’s excellent reason. Simple, warm decor, phenomenally professional server willing to make the hard choices when a diner just can’t, and exquisite food. Just exquisite.

The menu is set each day based on the best things available — usually two or three seafood items, beef, lamb, and the vegetables are perfection.

But save room for dessert: the sticky sorghum cake defies explanation. How can anything that simple be that incredible?

Grilled triggerfish

Beautifully grilled, tender, mild white fish, generous portion, served over new potatoes and asparagus in the spring. Not flashy, but perfect.

sticky sorghum cake with caramel ice cream

If there were six stars, this silky, almost gingerbread-like morsel would easily deserve them. And a large dollop of homemade seriously caramel ice cream beside it — to die for!

Always fabulous!

I am always amazed at all the wonderful and unique food this restaurant has. Reservations can be hard to come by, but you can always try for a last minute seat at the bar.

Hanger steak

Prepared perfectly with the most wonderful sauce – almost could have cut it with a fork it was so tender. The multiple types of mushrooms were the perfect compliment.

asparagus soup

Never tried asparagus as soup. I was not disappointed! Every spoon full was full of flavor and at the bottom pieces of asparagus awaited me!

Sorghum cake

It looks so plain, but tastes just the opposite. Light and oh so flavorful and the ice cream served with it made it that much better.
