Flaming Pit is one of the mainstays of Montgomery County. It has been around for as long as I can remember. It used to be the “place to be seen” in terms of dining in the Germantown area. It was elegant, the staff was always friendly, and considered an upper class restaurant.
I went there recently and honestly, was disappointed. The food was good (not great) and the prices, when compared with other restaurants in the area just didn’t measure up.
The staff still remains extremely friendly, and service is probably one of the best I’ve ever encountered. But it didn’t make up for the other factors.
In particular, my companion noted that the food lacked the depth of flavor that one would expect with this type of restaurant. She attributed that to the fact as we looked around, the crowd was considerably older (60’s and above) and perhaps they’d changed their menu to accommodate palates that preferred food with less flavor depth.
I can’t particularly justify the cost of this restaurant when considering alternatives. This is sad, because the staff is so friendly, and the atmosphere remains excellent.
This dish was ok. I expected the veal to be a higher quality than what it was. This was made up for by excellent side dishes, including asparagus and green beans. The crab that came with the dish was good, as was the sauce.
