Sunday Breakfast Dive Bar Style

I love cozy bars. Something about them makes you feel right at home and doesn’t making you feel horrible for drinking at 11am on a Sunday. I’d say Flanagan’s is one of those places. Laid back and casual, Flanagan’s is place where you could easily become a regular.

Located off of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway on Ingersoll Ave, Flanagan’s is easy to find. It’s welcoming, but not overly flashy. There is a small lot off to the side so parking is not a problem. Not much else surrounds Flanagan’s, but it still manages to have a strong and loyal following.

The inside is set up typical bar style with a few windows, wood paneled walls and lots of paraphernalia as decoration. Come in and seat yourself. There are booths and tables with additional seating at the bar and out on the patio. Too hot and early for the patio this last Sunday, but it looked like a comfortable place to sit and have a beer with friends. The staff seemed friendly enough, maybe not overly passionate about their jobs, but pleasant none the less.

Flanagan’s has a small menu for breakfast/brunch on Sundays, which is what we had. They also have typical bar food during lunch and dinner hours. The menu is just one page consisting of pancakes, omelets, French toast and biscuits and gravy. There are also the classic sides of hash browns, sausage, bacon, etc. Mimosas and bloody marys are on special during the mornings and the bloodys come with a beer back (good work because not everyone does this). We did not partake in the mimosas, but the bloody marys were pretty good and strong!

Their signature breakfast item is the PRIMO hash browns which are loaded up with jalapenos, banana peppers, onions and cheddar cheese. They were definitely my favorite part, although the onions were not cooked and closely resembled the potatoes so I got one big bite of onions and cheese which is not generally my idea of a good time. Everything else about them was excellent and this was definitely the highlight of our table’s meal picks.

A little explanation for my 3 star rating: service. While I realize this is a casual bar establishment, our service was pretty terrible. Their was a huge mix up with our food orders that caused one of our party to eat all by himself and finish his meal before ours even arrived. In attempt to remedy the mistake our waitress asked if he wanted another order of the same so he could eat with us, but of course he declined. His side order came out much later and at that point he didn’t want to eat a plate of sausage all by itself. I don’t expect an overly enthusiastic wait staff, but it would have been nice to get more of a response given the situation.

Overall, Flanagan’s food is certainly homey and will fill you up. You get plate loads of food for a good price. However, next visit I might just skip the food and consider Flanagan’s to be more of a beer hangout.
