Stats:
  • 3 dishes entered by diners at Gennaro's 5 North Square
Tips:
  • If you're on a romantic date or celebrating a special occasion, try to reserve the famous table 30, a quiet little corner table that offers the best views in the house.
  • Unlike most of the North End's popular eateries, 5 North Square doesn't offer valet service. Your best bet is to look for parking in the financial district (try around Broad St.) and then walk about 10 minutes.
  • Don't be surprised if you end up doing a little stargazing. The restaurant is popular with visiting athletes, as well as the occasional celebrity.

From OpenTable:

Welcome to Gennaro's 5 North Square, located in Boston's historic North End. The restaurant is under the management of Gennaro, who brought you the Caffe Vittoria,Florentine Cafe and Stanza dei Sigari. Gennaro's is located at 5 North Square the oldest square in America, a quite retreat located steps from busy Hanover Street. With it's cobblestone streets and gas lamposts, North Square is one of the most romantic spots in the North End and Boston. The cuisine at Gennaro's is traditional Italian home cooking with fresh seafood specialties served daily. We would love to have you visit us at Gennaro's and look forward to serving you!

From CityGrid:

Marisa Iocco, Boston's only Italian-born female chef, salutes Italian-American food at Gennaro's 5 North Square Restaurant in the North End with a menu she calls MangiAmerica ( "Eat, America" ).\n\nMangiAmerica celebrates the dishes that are the mainstays of the Italian-American table. Marisa pays homage to the soulful hominess and evocative flavors of italian-American cooking.\n\nBecause this is food that so often conjures up memories of personalities and places now departed, she has recreated these dishes as scrupulously- and reverentially- as possible. Sunday gravy is simmered for hours and ladled over house-made fresh macaroni. The mozzarella is produced locally. The fish is hand selected daily from the fishmonger. Some dishes are only available family-style-deliberately intended to be shared with and enjoyed by loved ones. (857) 250-0756

Really Delicious Italian Cuisine

This classy and reasonably priced (for fine food in Boston) two level Italian joint has delicious and creative pastas. It is perfect for a romantic date with booths upstairs next to the windows that overlook N Square. It is also good for a family dinner seated beneath the copper tile ceiling, or a more social dinner with friends in the more modern lower level.

The service here was swift without rushing us through our meal, and the food was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. One should definitely stop here

Dishes I tried:

Eggplant Napoleon

In the style of a traditional Napoleon, but an appetizer rather than a dessert, eggplant is layered with ricotta cheese and tomato sauce and baked to make a unique and tasty antipasti.

Lobster Ravioli

These Ravioli are filled with chopped lobster and served with a rich saffron cream sauce topped with more lobster in whole pieces and caviar. A definite delicious meal that takes advantage of the local crustaceans.

Butternut Squash Ravioli

Titled deceptively as a vegetarian item, these ravioli are filled with sweet butternut squash and served with a delicately flavored cream sauce featuring wild mushrooms and confit de canard (pieces of seared duck). the flavors work together magically.

Feb. 12, 2011, dinning at Gennaro's, Boston's North End

My wife and I dined at Gennaro's last night. For the money it was a good choice. Our entrees were good. I got the Jumbo Spinach/cheese ravioli my wife got the Rolled Stuffed Eggplant. What was disappointing was the $10 Cesar Salad…
