Not Worth Your Time

Slow service on a modestly busy day. Food comes from the same distributor that provides for chain restaurants, like Applebee’s, yet HiFi believes they should charge twice the amount. Maybe for their dark and bland atmosphere?

The food was bland, the tap beer had an odd taste, and when I asked to speak to a manager about the lack of service, she first stared at my table from a far, then came over with an attitude. The server himself was very nice, but the restaurant itself sucks.

Imagine two burgers slapped together with less than an ounce of blue cheese (should be more of course), squished between a stale bun that’s been toasted to fool you into thinking it is fresh. You also get baked beans straight from a can, a spoonful of coleslaw (which actually is good), and a pickle. Having been a manager in restaurants for years, I can tell you this burger costs them about 2.35 (labor included) and costs you 12.00.

FINALLY NOT ANOTHER CHAIN

My wife and our neighbor decided to try Hi Fi Restaurant for an adult evening of drinks and dinner. Wow is the first thing that comes to mind. As we were approached by the friendly host with a friendly smile, we than went to the bar to wait for our friends. We noticed the restaurant is non smoking BRAVO. My wife fell in love with the drink menu which was interesting enough to want one of each. we enjoyed our cocktail and than proceeded to our table, which was a very comfortable booth with plenty of room. The menu unique and very different from the normal chain restaurant. We were greeted very quickly by an upbeat, cheerful server. We each ordered something different. We started with the sampler and was truly impressed by the food. I ordered the New York steak and was cooked to perfection and was so flavorful. My wife had the whitefish which was fresh and satisfying. The service was A++++++++ our demands were met and we were overly grateful. We ended our meal with the fried Twinkies which came rec commanded by the server and was a delightful ending to a great meal. The atmosphere was very energetic and full of smiling faces. Thank u Hi Fi for bringing a touch of down town Chicago dining to Highland. The only downfall was the distance we had to park in the rear of the building. Our overall dining experience was overly exceeded and will return many times, and will tell the neighborhood. Welcome to Highland HiFi

we had a party of five. 2 of us ordered the ribs and bbq chicken combo with potato soup. the soup was good, the ribs and bbq chicken were served at room temprature. the bbq sauce not very exciting, ribs were ok and the chicken was a no! the combo meal came with a cornbread muffin which was good, but the size of a large thimble and some kind of baked beans which consisted of beans in sauce with cut up hot dogs = terrible. the three others all had the buttermilk fried chicken. all three gave the entree a thumbs down. served with the fried chicken was a veggie medley, it twas terrible hard as a brick. the fried chicken was to be served with texas coleslaw which it was not and all entrees were to be served with a bread basket, which it was not. why would they charge more money for fried chicken than tiebels which is 1,000times better. to top our experience the server told us that after we had our food she was going to have smoke. WAY OVERPRICED NEVER AGAIN!

It's about time Northwest Indiana!

I was hesitant to eat at the newest addition of NW Indiana restaurants due to past disappointments, but I’m glad I did. My great dining experience started as soon as I walked up to the door and was greeted by the smiling, friendly, and welcoming hostess. Soon after my date and I were seated we ordered drinks. He was impressed by the variety of beers to choose from and the martinis were excellent, my favorite is the key lime martini. The menu is very unique and there’s so much to choose from. The server was super friendly and took the time to answer questions, she was very informed on the menu and gave great suggestions. We started off with the appetizer sampler, the fried pickles were excellent and put Hooters fried pickles to shame. My date ordered the stuffed burger; he said it was so juicy and perfectly seasoned that he ordered another one to take home for lunch the next day! The salmon I ordered was hands down the best I’ve ever had. I will definitely go back to Hi-Fi and undoubtedly recommend it to my friends and family. Finally, I can have a night out and enjoy great drinks, excellent food, and A++ service right in my neighborhood!

Not impressed. Perhaps opening month jitters?

The decor is pretty nice. The map of NWI is impressive. The wait staff were nice and dressed well. That’s really about it for the good.

I feel the food was a bit pricey for what we got. I tried the “Hog Eggs” which were little more than hard boiled eggs that were halved, battered, then deep fried. They were a little on the bland side and sat in my belly like a rock. My wife ordered the appetizer portion of the Crab Cake. It was extremely over-priced. And, yes, it was a single crab cake smaller than a hockey puck. I forget what the price was. I think it was around $10.00 or so. My wife said it was good so I let that be… for now. I ordered the Polish Sausage which was smothered in chili. This turned out to be a knife and fork meal. When I cut into it and tasted it there was a very farmilliar taste. It was actually 2 hot dogs!!! Actually, it was 1.5 hot dogs. Since we waited a little longer than I had expected to get our food I decided to choke it down and live with it but I was definitely going to express my dissatisfaction to management. When I had that opportunity I explained my / our dissatisfaction with the quality / quantity of our meal I was told the customers weren’t really liking the polish sausage so they switched to a hot dog. I asked “Why was I not informed”? I just paid like $12.00 (I forget how much the plate really cost but it was definitely up there.) for a damn hot dog!?!?" I then asked for the reason that a single crab cake would cost so much. I was told they were only using the very best crab meat. Hooray for that! However, we aren’t dining in some world famous fish house like Nick’s Fish Market or Shaw’s Crab Shack where the restaurant in and of itself can justify paying such top-dollar for a simple crab cake. I left the restaurant feeling mislead and dissatisfied and about $50.00 poorer. For what it’s worth, the kids plates are served on a souvenier frizbee. That was kinda cool.

It wasn’t even a polish sausage. It was a damn hot dog!!!! The waitress said nothing about any change in menu!!!! It wasn’t even taken off my bill when I expressed a complaint!!!

wow

well, we came into this new restaurant to see what the new owners have done to it. we have eaten at every restaurant that has inhabited the building. the inside is cozy, clean and invites you to have a good time. our waiter was friendly and knowlegable about the items on the menu. we ordered appetizers that were absolutely huge in portions! so ok, we started to eat and didn’t get a third of the way thru and then here comes our entrees! my wife is a vegan and was a little hesistant to go into a steakhouse (usually all she eats is a salad and a baked potato) but here is a veggie burger ,and not JUST an old veggie burger-this sucker was HUGE!!! larger than a saucer, it came with all the trimmings plus coselaw and fries. she just smiled and softly asked for a box to take it home. i ordered a turkey club and it came out HUGE. we ended up leaving with 4 bags. our waiter kept my glass filled. another nice thing was there were a few familiar faces from Zuni’s there, so we really felt at home. when my wife came out of the bathroom she was impressed by the decorating-she stated there was a map on the floor! oh, there was a neat map of NW indiana on one entire wall. neat place, we will definately be back with friends!

Good experience

I am glad I didn’t read the reviews before I went – I might not have gone!
We went to Hi Fi for my husband’s birthday. He loves crabcakes and has eaten them all over the country and gave them a “thumbs up” as an appetizer. I had the ribs and they were fantastic. You didn’t need any extra sauce like so many places. It clung to the meat and weren’t even that messy.
We also shared a large salad that was very good.
Our wait staff was knowledgeable and pleasant. It was early evening on a Saturday when we went and our food came in a reasonable amount of time.
Being life-long region folks, we really enjoyed the decor.

Mistakes, they made a few....

Price point: I estimate about half of the price points were to high. Not terribly so, but A few stand out (the 8 dollar polish sausage).

Service: The first two times I was there, service was a bit slow, but acceptable. on NewYears eve it was awful. It Did not appear to be the waitresses fault, but whoever put together the schedule. They were noticeably understaffed .

Food : Appetizers are a good size for the price, most were pretty good , there is one that stands out as terrific, Grilled snappers: Jumbo jalapeno peppers, stuffed w/ Vermont sharp cheddar wrapped w/ apple-wood smoked bacon, on a bed of salsa & topped w/ sour cream. A welcome change from deep fried poppers. they were served with out the sour cream, but were still good.
On the other side of the coin, prehistoric hog eggs: Hard boiled eggs breaded & fried, rolled in Louisiana hot sauce & side of horseradish ranch. Bleh!
I like eggs, but these were not good.

Entrees were decent, out of 3 visits food was lukewarm 2 times, one of which I received a half raw BBQ chicken thigh.

I might go back, but only for appetizers

Three strikes & you're out!

First time we went when it first opened, bad service and the food was so so. We thought we would give it another chance. Second time, my husband’s chicken came out raw on the inside but they took care of his meal so we decided to give them one more chance. Most recently we went there and if we weren’t there with other family, we would have got up and walked out. The service was the absolute worst the last time, we were freezing cold, and I ordered the ribs. You could tell the ribs were pre-cooked and came out of the frig to warm b/c there was still a chill on some of them. Those beans that someone else mentioned – gross! All three times, the wait service was pretty bad…just like others said, they don’t know when to put things in so they come out at a proper time.

novice wait staff

i tried this place twice thinking the first time was just bad because they first opened. the food is o.k. but the wait staff does not know when to place orders at the right time. not even halfway through appetizers or salad and food is there. this happened both times i was there. wait staff needs to use common sense when knowing when to put orders in for the line. i have know idea why they are trying to turn a table so fast when there is no one there anyway.
