A restaurant with a past feeds you decent food

We ended up here on our drive down to San Jose from Seattle. While looking for a place to eat, we chose here because it was very similar to one of our friend’s name…and we were getting hungry.

It turns out that this place has quite a bit of history in terms of how it came about. For example, it’s supposed to be the oldest restaurant to have survived since 1879. It was also speakeasy too at some point, providing alcohol to folks in a coffee mug. NICE.

I think the food was normal. Not gross, but I don’t think that it was specatacular. However, just for the sake of checking out a bit of Portland history, it may be worth dropping by.

It’s a bit weird in terms of location because it’s hidden inside a building from one street, but visible from another. Just look around that area and you’ll find it for sure.

Clam Chowder

Normal, good.

Turkey Mushroom Pie

I think that’s what the name was…but it was pretty juicy and good. I knew right away that I wouldn’t get full off of it though.

Worst service I've ever had in Portland, I've given better service when voluteering at soup kitchens. The food was bland and I bet the original owners are turning over in their graves. It's now just a bar with marginal food and the bar is…

  • The famed Spanish coffee is a must. Each fiery ambrosial drink is prepared tableside by the dizzying hands of a talented bartender.
  • The bar on the old side offers a lively weekend and after-work scene. Go for the eye-candy but stay for the ambience.

From OpenTable:

Established in 1879, Huber's is Portland's Oldest Restaurant. It was originally called the "Bureau Saloon". Mr. Huber was involved from the beginning as a bartender, bought out the original owner then changed the name to Huber's.
In the old days if you bought a drink you got a free turkey sandwich. This is how the turkey tradition started. Today Huber's cooks 150 lbs of turkey a day. It's Thanksgiving everyday at Huber's serving a traditional turkey dinner every day. We also serve Certified Angus Beef and fresh seafood. Huber's is also known for its famous Spanish Coffee. The drink is made table-side with great fanfare. It's is a lot of fun and very tasty. Come in and enjoy Old Portland at its best.
