Ichiban has average sushi. Me and my roommates got two party trays, containing california rolls, tuna rolls, salmon rolls, among various others. The sushi was not standout in any way and other Berkeley locations have better sushi. TGI Sushi has better, and maybe even Tako sushi. The good thing about Ichiban is that it can have pretty good deals. The trays, when divided, are a good deal for the amount of sushi you receive. They also have some coupons which offer good prices for a Japanese meal. But some dishes also are quite expensive, and aren’t worth getting. The environment of the restaurant has a nice Japanese feel, which is nice. You can also take-out, which is also appreciated. I’ve ordered other stuff here too, such as the chicken teriyaki, and it is nothing remarkable. The waitress we got also was not very nice. I recommend going at lunch, because the prices are pretty good then. Otherwise, go to another location, because they are better, and have better service.

My boyfriend and I go here because we love Japanese food, but neither of us are big sushi lovers (I hate seafood of any sort). I usually get the chicken or tongkatsu, and he the chicken teriyaki dish. We like to go there at lunch and usually get the bento boxes, this way we can eat Japanese for fairly cheap. I really like this place, the salad dressing is so-so, but the miso soup is delicious. The people are friendly, but not over the top. Its a slightly better than average Japanese restaurant, but not super great or anything…I would have rated it a 3.5 if the rating system allowed halfers, but whatev. I’ll give it a four because I’m feeling generous tonight.
