Afternoon tea LA style

Nestled amongst the eclectic shops of Abbot Kinney hides the jewel of the tea scene in LA. Jin is the reason I find myself in Venice every weekend.

The main sitting area is a small courtyard filled with well groomed landscaping that creates a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your perfectly steeped tea and pastries. While the wait can be quite long for a seat, the host (the ever-friendly and quiet Hugo) will gladly call your cell phone when a space is available, thus allowing you the chance to peruse the many nearby shops (Take a peak at Tortise if you get a chance).

There is a wide variety of tea to choose from and the staff is always ready to provide a recommendation should you require one. In addition to the tea, Jin also offers small meals (not for those with large apetites), pastries, and chocolates. The pastries and chocolates are delicate and contain subtle flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. For a complete listing please visit their website.

Be forewarned that the courtyard is open air and will be closed for seating should it rain. Also, the prices are on the high side, but are fair considering the attention to detail and perfection found in each menu offering.

The perfect place to take a special someone and relax.

Tea Sampler

A sampling of pastries, chocolates, and other goodies. Everything is fresh, delicate, and delicious.

Rokuchan Midori Tea

My favorite tea. The staff carefully brews all of its teas and serves them in a pot sans the leaves, so that your tea will not oversteep while you enjoy your meal.

tea & crumpets anyone?

this place is so cute!

the 2 times i’ve been here, there was a bridal shower held here each time. w/its adorable garden, and friendly staff, i feel ‘at home’ in this little house of a restaurant.

better known for their chocolates, never leave home without a couple. comes in a pretty box, that I use as a make shift travel jewelry box.

cute for girls brunch, or a little date with your SO.

A pricey patisserie

I visited Jin Patisserie recently to meet a friend from out of town. I’ve been here twice in total and all in all, they have good cakes, but their prices are ridiculous. I also detest how parking in Venice is atrocious, and I wish they had indoor seating (come on, it gets cold on the Westside!)

I’ve tried their mysterious, passion, and green tea cakes. The mysterious (passion fruit with hazelnut cream filled with spiced diced pineapple – subtle, lovely hazelnut flavor with a nice pineapple kick throughout) and the passion (mascarpone, passion fruit & fresh mango (sweet, delicate mascarpone with a mango filling) are both wonderful. The green tea cake, however, is completely tasteless. (Maybe the ones with more interesting names are better…?)

I also tried a few of their chocolates the last time I was here: mango kalamansi, black sesame, cafe rum, and the sea salt caramel. These four miniscule chocolates cost me a whopping $10, and honestly, they weren’t particularly good. There was barely, if any, flavor of the kalamansi in the mango calamansi, and the black sesame chocolale was also lacking in flavor. Cafe rum and sea salt caramel are passable in taste, but there dozens of better places to buy gourmet chocolates in LA.

Anyway, I wouldn’t be a regular here, due to the high prices.

Green tea cake

Completely tasteless. Just tastes like baked flour with bland whipped frosting. Maybe the cakes with more interesting names are better…?
